INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week honors were announced for the East and West Division on Monday afternoon.
Twelve of the 14 teams from the Great Midwest competed at the 2018 Midwest Region Crossover on Friday and Saturday, the first time it has been conducted at The Volleyball Academy in Indianapolis.
With the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) serving as host, 57 matches were conducted on 10 courts in just two days. Thirty-eight teams from the Great Midwest, GLIAC and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), were all in attendance once again this year.
No match against any Midwest Region opponent is a given and there were certainly some tough draws against nationally-ranked programs.
Competition at this year’s event will again factor into some of the discussion by the regional advisory committee as it helps determine the national tournament field outside of the automatic qualifiers.
East Division Player of the Week
Olivia Zanolli
Walsh
Setter
Senior
North Canton, OH (Jackson HS)
After falling in the first set 25-12, the Cavaliers made one of the most resilient stands you’ll ever see on the floor as they came back to stun No. 10 Rockhurst in four games.
Zanolli was a driving force in the comeback effort as she averaged 10.50 assists per set and helped the Cavaliers eventually hit .215 in the upset win.
The 5-10 Zanolli was credited with 48 assists on an efficient 53 setting attempts, good for a percentage over .900.
She also averaged 1.40 digs and a half block per set as Walsh remains in the driver’s set at the top of the East Division.
Zanolli also contributed 26 assists against Lewis and had 31 more vs. Saginaw Valley State. She is currently third in the league in assists per set, averaging 10.48 on the year.
Walsh played against the Hawks, a traditionally strong program from the GLVC that makes the NCAA Championship bracket seemingly on an annual basis. The Cavaliers also were tasked with taking on No. 20 Lewis, another GLVC school, while also playing Saginaw Valley State from the GLIAC.
West Division Player of the Week
Amanda Remmetter
Ohio Dominican
Outside Hitter
Freshman
Springfield, OH (Greenon HS)
In her first season at the collegiate level, Remmetter has given a glimpse at how bright the future can be as a building block for ODU’s young program.
Already among the league’s best in several categories, Remmetter continued her strong play at the Midwest Region Crossover, where the Panthers earned two wins in five-set fashion over the weekend.
ODU was one of the last teams on the floor battling it out by the time each session would end, but the hard work paid off with the desired results.
Remmetter produced the highest kill total in the league this season with 28 hammered against Maryville (GLVC) as she took 65 swings on Friday. The rookie would hit .354 and also helped out on a pair of blocks.
She had her second 20-plus kill effort in as many days with 21 against Purdue-Northwest. Remmetter was busy again up front with 55 attack attempts. She completed the double-double with 11 digs and had two more blocks.
Remmetter averaged 4.73 points in the three matches, 4.38 kills and hit .317. She is currently ranked sixth in the league overall in kills per set this season.
