Women’s Soccer Players of the Week (Oct. 1)

10.1.18

INDIANAPOLIS - As October starts and less than four weeks remain until the conference tournament begins, new Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Players of the Week were named on Monday afternoon.

The top of the pack is clustered in the conference standings, as three teams are all within one point of each other in a battle for first.

Findlay, Ohio Valley, and Walsh, all have six conference wins and seven overall wins this season. However, Walsh handed Findlay its first league loss of the season on Saturday to move into the tie. Trevecca, Ohio Dominican and Cedarville are also within the top half of the playoff hunt, with 16, 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Offensive Player of the Week
Konstantina Giannou
Ohio Valley
Midfield
Sophomore
Riza, Greece (High School of Xylokastro)

Giannou's impressive performance on Thursday against Kentucky Wesleyan resulted in a hat trick in just 61 minutes of play that puts her at the top of the Great Midwest leaderboards.

With wins on Thursday and Saturday at Trevecca, Ohio Valley is now tied for second place in the league with 19 points. Giannou, the reigning Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year, has helped the Fighting Scots’ offense pick up the pace as of late.

Giannou's hat trick came back-to-back-to-back in the 29th, 37th, and 50th minutes of play, helping the Fighting Scots in their 7-2 triumph over Kentucky Wesleyan. Giannou's first goal was assisted by Mileidys Saenz, while her other two were assisted by last week's conference offensive player of the week Fernanda Araya.

In the match, Giannou took one other shot which went above the goalpost.

During the Fighting Scots' 3-0 upset over Trevecca on Saturday, Giannou ripped two shots, one of them on frame while the other was blocked.

Giannou now leads the conference with three game-winning goals, and is tied for third place in total goals this season. Giannou is also in the current league leader list with 11 points (T5), 28 shots (8th) and 1.27 points per game (9th).

Defensive Player of the Week
Corynne Swift

Senior
Loveland, OH (Loveland)

Swift helped Walsh extended the program’s winning streak to four straight with a shutout win against Tiffin and a victory over first-place Findlay.

The Oilers still have a one-point lead in the standings over the rest of the field, but the Cavaliers proved to the league they will be in the regular season championship chase and ultimately, the postseason title hunt.

Walsh improved to 7-2-1 as the defensive gave up just one goal in 180 minutes from the two wins. Swift has been a part of a defense that has pitched seven total shutouts this year alone.

She scored a rare goal against Tiffin and has played a team-leading 905 minutes to lead the Cavaliers this fall.
