1.23.18

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week were announced on Tuesday with Malone earning both honors.

The Pioneers will also host the inaugural Great Midwest/Mountain East Championships in Canton, Ohio on Feb. 14.

Men’s Athlete of the Week
Wesley Hammond
Malone
Freshman
Galena, OH (Big Walnut HS)

Malone recorded victories over Notre Dame (OH) as well as fellow conference member Alderson Broaddus this past weekend and Hammond played a part in that with his efforts.

He swam in three events and took home first in two of them. He moved into Malone’s all-time Top 10 in the 1,000-yard freestyle with his winning time of 10:23.06.

He followed that up with a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. He finished the competition with his second first-place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:06.57.

His 1,000-yard freestyle time ranks as the eighth best time in the conference in that event this season.

This is the third time this season a Malone swimmer has won the Men’s Athlete of the Week with the other two coming in the form of freshman diver Dominic Mariano and freshman Brice Dixon.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Carolin Friedrich
Malone
Senior
Rotenburg, Germany (Berufsbildende Schulen Rotenburg)

Friedrich, a senior from Germany, also swam in three events against Notre Dame College and Alderson Broaddus, taking first place in all three of those events.

She started off the competition with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay alongside Abby Reynolds, Kalia Butterworth and Quincy Livchak. That ranked as the top 400-yard medley relay time this season for the Pioneers.

She continued her stretch with a win in her only individual event, the 1,000-yard freestyle. Her time of 11:23.66 took home the victory by almost 20 seconds over the next fastest competitor.

She closed as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay. Again with Reynolds, Butterworth, and Livchak, Friedrich placed first in the event putting a solid end to her night.

Friedrich is also the third Malone female to win the weekly league award this season, joining freshmen Abby Reynolds and Denise Quentin.
