Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week (Jan. 2)

1.2.18

INDIANAPOLIS – The first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week honor for the new calendar year was earned by Alderson Broaddus junior guard Mike Davis (Cleveland, OH/Garfield Heights HS/Lakeland CC) on Tuesday.

Davis and the Battlers scored a key conference win against a 12-2 Hillsdale program to even their league record back to .500 entering 2018. AB improved to 8-4 overall with the 79-68 win against the Chargers.

Davis has emerged among the league’s elite scorers in his first season in Philippi, currently second in the league in points per game at 20.8 behind Malone’s Ty Jordan (21.7).

His high-flying athleticism has been on display in the league since transferring from Lakeland CC in Kirtland, Ohio. Davis soared for one-handed slam that quickly went viral against Bowie State earlier in the season that caught the attention on SportsCenter as a top play.

Davis has scored in double figures for all 12 games this year. His performance over the holiday break included a 22-point effort against Hillsdale on 8-of-16 shooting.

Davis also pulled down five rebounds and for the third game in a row, dished out six assists. He also was a disruptor on the defensive end of the floor with four steals.

AB has had two Great Midwest Men’s Basketball Athletes of the Week following a selection for Brandon Willis earlier in the season.

On the year, Davis has scored 250 points while averaging 3.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He is also shooting over 45 percent from the field and over 76 percent on his free throw attempts.
