INDIANAPOLIS - The first 2018 Great Midwest Athlete Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday following two strong performances in the new calendar year.
Two more women’s records were shattered from Hillsdale and Ursuline as weather threw a wrench into some program’s travel schedules.
The 2018 indoor conference championships will be a great one in late February on the Hillsdale campus.
Track Athlete of the Week
Hannah McIntyre
Hillsdale
Senior
Colorado Springs (Palmer HS)
A recent NCAA All-American in cross country, McIntyre made a splash with a new Great Midwest 3K record at the Wolverine Invitational with an abundance of Division I competition.
She would finish 12th in the event with a provisional time of 9:49.64, a standard that now ranks second overall in NCAA Division II this season.
McIntyre clipped the previous conference record of 9:50.28 held by Cedarville’s former All-American Olivia Esbenshade (2/10/17).
The event was won by former Hillsdale legend Emily Oren, who was a seven-time NCAA champion and two-time NCAA DII Track Athlete of the Year.
McIntyre is a three-time NCAA All-American in track, the indoor 3K and the outdoor 5K and 10K -- all done last year as a junior. She also helped deliver a conference championship in cross country in the Chargers first season of competition in the G-MAC.
Field Athlete of the Week
Sugar Henry
Ursuline
Freshman
Upper Darby, PA (Upper Darby HS)
The next in a traditional line of standout jumpers has arrived with Ursuline’s jumps unit as Henry broke a longstanding record held since 2013 in the Great Midwest.
Henry had a clearance of 36’ 8.25” (11.18m) to place second in the event at the Grand Valley State-hosted Bob Eubanks Open.
She broke the previous conference record of Cedarville’s Beth Jones (11.16m) from December of 2013 at the Findlay Oiler Opener.
Henry cracked a record that has stood the test of time as the sport of women’s track and field has really emerged across the league in recent history.
The longest standing indoor record in conference history is now the 4x4 relay (Ursuline) from 2014.
