INDIANAPOLIS – The first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week were announced by the league on Tuesday morning.
The first non-conference contests were completed as the regular season officially got underway on Thursday. The Great Midwest has all 13 teams factoring in the conference standings as league play starts this week.
Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Week
#3 Lauren Winters
Trevecca
Forward
Sr. – Joelton, TN (Beech HS)
Winters receives her second career Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Week award as the Trojans began their new season with a 3-1 win over Shorter.
TNU’s first game of the season was originally scheduled against Union but cancelled due to weather conditions. The Trojans had to wait just a couple more days to officially launch the new coaching era with Kelsey Fenix in her first year on the sidelines.
Winters now has 33 points while at Trevecca, netting goals No. 9 and 10 of her career against Shorter. She scored both goals in the second half – the tying score and the go-ahead shot – against the Hawks’ defense.
Winters was credited with the game winner and helped deliver Fenix her first win as head coach. The senior forward recorded both scores in unassisted fashion.
Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Week
#1 Allison Garlock
Cedarville
Goalkeeper
So. – Lebanon, OH (Lebanon HS)
Garlock recorded a pair of shutout wins against Midwest Region opponents as the Yellow Jackets blanked Saginaw Valley State (GLIAC) and Lewis (GLVC).
The sophomore keeper is transitioning seamlessly after replacing 2016 G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year Hanna Harris in the starting lineup. Garlock played all possible 180 minutes in net and made a combined 11 saves.
Versus Saginaw Valley State, Garlock made five stops on 18 shots faced from the Cardinals’ offense. Her line was similar against Lewis as she stopped the Flyers with six saves on 15 shots.
The first two games of the season represented the fifth and sixth starts of her career. In 696 minutes, Garlock has a stellar 1.29 goals against average.
