INDIANAPOLIS – Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican officially open up the Great Midwest Athletic Conference football schedule this weekend as teams get ready for the fourth week of the regular season.
LEC and ODU will battle for their first win of the year as the rest of the league continues non-conference play and Kentucky Wesleyan enjoys the bye.
Findlay and Hillsdale are both 2-1 to lead all teams at the top of the standings. The league has a combined 6-17 record through the first three weeks of the fall.
Alderson Broaddus (1-2) and Findlay delivered Week 3 victories around the league as the Battlers trounced Lincoln and the Oilers routed William Jewell. Between the two schools, total offense was racked up in bunches as both schools set single-game team conference records in different areas.
The I-79 Barrel Classic between AB and Glenville State is an extremely intriguing matchup on paper. Glenville State carried a lead against No. 6 Shepherd in Week 3 into the second half while the Battlers are carrying more confidence after dominating Lincoln on the defensive side of the ball.
AB also won last year’s head-to-head tussle with Glenville State, 19-7, in a fierce defensive struggle.
Hillsdale’s bid for a 3-0 start to the year was interrupted by McKendree by just three points as the Chargers just couldn’t get any points mustered in the final quarter. Likewise, Kentucky Wesleyan (1-2) only lost by seven points in a close one against Kentucky State from the SIAC despite three touchdown passes from Mike McGee. Malone (0-2) also was a one-touchdown deficit victim in a loss against Shaw.
Hillsdale's Week 4 matchup is against a red-hot undefeated UIndy program that is ranked #14 in the nation and beat then-No. 2 Grand Valley State to start the season.
Walsh (0-3) put up a season-high 31 points against Division I Jacksonville down in Florida while Ohio Dominican carried a lead halfway through the game against defending Ivy League champion Penn. The Cavaliers flashed big-play ability with a 54-yard run and a 76-yard passing play in its offensive arsenal.
Urbana pulled away from Lake Erie (0-3) despite monstrous numbers put up again by linebacker Thomas Covington (28 tackles, sack, 3 forced fumbles, interception on the season).
