INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Players of the Week for offensive and defensive accomplishments were announced on Tuesday morning.
All 11 teams in the standings have played at least one conference contest with the majority having completed two. Findlay is at the top with a 2-0-0 record while Ohio Valley and Trevecca are currently tied for second at 1-0-1.
Walsh and Cedarville have also clawed their way into the conference win column at this point in the season.
Ohio Valley completed a tremendous three-game run (all Midwest Region wins) over the past week to collectively sweep offensive and defensive honors in the league.
The Fighting Scots avenged last year’s playoff defeat in the conference tournament to Cedarville, blanked Northwood (MI) and saved their best for last with a stunning upset in the final moments against No. 4 Saginaw Valley State.
Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Week
Guillermo Segovia
Ohio Valley
Forward
So. – Madrid, Spain
Segovia had his fingerprints all over the outcome of all three OVU wins, displaying his prowess as a playmaker and goal scorer. He recorded at least one point in each contest and finished with three goals and two assists.
Segovia struck twice in the first half against Cedarville to help give his team a 3-0 lead at halftime. His first goal of the season came in the 15th minute of regulation and found another gap in the Yellow Jackets’ defense eight minutes later at the 23:35 mark.
At Northwood, the Fighting Scots flexed their muscle with a 3-0 blanking as Segovia netted the match’s first goal for the eventual game winner. His third goal of the week came with less than five minutes off the clock in the first half.
He was also credited with an assist on OVU’s third and final goal to complete the scoring.
The Fighting Scots officially put the nation on notice with the win against No. 4 Saginaw Valley State and should be in the United Soccer top 25 when new rankings are released. Segovia was the delivery man on the only goal in the 84th minute.
Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Week
Carlos Rubio
Ohio Valley
Goalkeeper
Sr. – Valencia, Spain
Through 470 minutes, the Fighting Scots defense has yet to allow one goal scored against them and Rubio is the ringleader of the stingy unit.
That equates to five consecutive shutouts and a single-game conference record in career shutouts (17) for Rubio, who earned defensive weekly honors for the third time in his OVU tenure.
Rubio entered the season with 12 shutouts since 2015 and now finds himself in a first-place tie with Cedarville’s Ethan Dewhurst (2012-14).
He faced a total of 19 shots between all three opponents, an indication of how much control of the possession Ohio Valley had against teams. Rubio made a combined eight saves to improve his career record to 24-14-3.
His goals against average through over 3,700 minutes played is 1.14, third all-time in league history.
