INDIANAPOLIS – The new edition of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team was officially released on Friday following the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year.
The 2016-17 Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team was comprised of a record 571 student-athletes from eight total member institutions while covering 20 championship-sponsored sports. The sport of men's lacrosse will be counted separately this year with four associate members also contributing to the numbers.
The first edition of the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team had 189 student-athletes in 2012-13. The 2013-14 academic listing featured 382 student-athletes and the 2014-15 team included 416 selections. Last year included 507 total student-athlete honorees.
For the fifth consecutive year, Cedarville University had a conference-leading 118 student-athlete selections while Alderson Broaddus University was second with 82 and Trevecca Nazarene University was third with 71.
To be named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team, the student-athlete’s grade point average must be a minimum of 3.30 based on the 4.0 system, the GPA shall be cumulative for the student-athlete’s entire collegiate career and the student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing while completing at least one full academic year at the nominating institution.
The 2017-18 academic year promises to feature even better numbers across the board with the additions of Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh, to the league as official members.
In 2016-17, 22 different student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.
