INDIANAPOLIS – Kentucky Wesleyan freshman Tyanne Bentley and junior Crystal Hopkins were named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Monday.
The Panthers competed in the Rhodes Invitational this past weekend to officially open their portion of the outdoor season.
Bentley established herself in the top 10 of four different events (100m, 200m, 4x1 relay, 4x4 relay) in the G-MAC outdoor record books.
Bentley, along with teammates, Breigh Haase, Teairra Payton and Taleia Mason, finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with an impressive time of 49.44 seconds. The time also put the quartet fifth all-time in the league’s history.
Bentley had a busy day while also competing in the 4x800-meter relay with teammates Erin Wilson, Rachel Keeley and Sarah Browning where the foursome set a new Kentucky Wesleyan record with a time of 10:32.93.
In the short sprints, Bentley asserted herself among the league’s best with two more strong showings in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
She tied for ninth all-time with a 12.58 in the 100-meter dash and then clocked a 25.62 in the 200-meter distance to rank seventh in the conference performance list.
After a phenomenal indoor season, Hopkins showcased her throwing ability by setting a new conference record in the hammer throw. Hopkins and teammate Cornelia Thomas actually both broke the previous-best attempt as Hopkins tossed 48.72 meters.
She also had a 12.93m attempt in shot put that ranks fifth-best in conference history. Hopkins holds the record that she set as a freshman in 2015 at the Hilltopper Invitational.
The Panthers look to repeat their impressive performance this weekend when they compete in the Lindsey Wilson Invitational in Columbia, Ky., on Friday and Saturday.
