INDIANAPOLIS - Malone junior forward Mitchell Spotleson was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday.
This is Spotleson’s second conference weekly honor of the current season.
Spotleson and the Pioneers played two conference games over the week, earning a split at home in Canton. A win on Wednesday would put the Pioneers in the postseason as one of the six teams to qualify for the G-MAC Championship.
Thursday, the Pioneers hosted No. 15 Kentucky Wesleyan and played the Panthers arguably as tough as anyone has this season.
Spotleson represented himself very well in the effort, scoring a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting and more impressively, hitting five of his seven three-point shots.
On Saturday, the Pioneers welcomed Trevecca Nazarene into Osborne Hall and got themselves back on the winning side of the scoreboard with a 71-67 victory. Another impressive performance by Spotleson played a big role in the win for the Pioneers. Spotleson scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out three assists.
Spotleson now ranks ninth in the league in scoring at 13.1 ppg, is fifth in rebounding at 6.5 rpg and fourth in field goal percentage at over 52 percent. He’s also tied with teammate Nate Sheppard for the third-most triples made (45) and is fourth in three-point field goal percentage at .425 from long range.
