Official NCAA Championships Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Committee has announced the participants for the 2017 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference will be sending three teams and two individuals to the national meet for the 6K women’s and 10K men’s races.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals had to qualify in their respective NCAA regional competitions that were held this past weekend.
For the women, Hillsdale and Walsh finished second and third at the NCAA Midwest Regional this past weekend at Cedarville. The Great Midwest had the top three placewinners, Sarah Berger (Walsh), Hannah McIntyre (Hillsdale) and Jade Smith (Malone).
Smith will be making the trip to nationals as an individual along with Hope Jones of Southern Indiana to represent the Midwest Region.
The Walsh men had to be a little bit more patient for confirmation of the program’s first NCAA DII qualification into the NCAA Championship. The Cavaliers, led by Jacob Kernell, finished fourth as a team at the NCAA Midwest Regional to earn an at-large selection.
Cedarville’s Daniel Michalski, the reigning Great Midwest Runner of the Year for the current season, qualified for nationals as an individual with James Ngandu of Tiffin, Trevor Holowaty of Ferris State and Armando Torres from Wisconsin-Parkside.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top three, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 24 teams. Eight additional teams were selected at-large. A minimum of 24 additional individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. The list of advancing teams and individuals is outlined below.
The championships will be held Nov. 18 in Evansville, Ind., at Angel Mounds. The University of Southern Indiana and the Evansville Sport Corporation will serve as the co-hosts of the championships. The women’s race will begin at 11:15 a.m. Eastern time, followed by the men’s race at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time.
