INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference will have two schools in the field of 38 as the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship bracket was introduced on Monday night during the selection show.
The final field was determined by the NCAA DII Men’s Soccer Committee as two to six teams were selected from eight different regions.
This is the first time the Great Midwest will have had two members represented in the men’s soccer regional bracket.
Ohio Valley, reigning regular season and conference tournament champs, carried the mantle as the top seed in the Midwest Region rankings for three consecutive weeks. The Fighting Scots (17-1-3) will an enjoy an opening-round bye before awaiting the winner of No. 4 Davis & Elkins and No. 5 Saginaw Valley State.
As one of two hosts of the Midwest Regional, OVU will host D&E and SVSU in Charleston, W.Va., at Schoenbaum Stadium. The other half of the bracket will be playing at Rockhurst University.
Ohio Valley earned the league’s automatic qualifier spot while Davis & Elkins, the conference tourney runner-up, merited an at-large selection from the committee with a 14-3-2 overall record. The Senators were sixth in the Midwest Region rankings two weeks ago before climbing up to No. 4 and holding that position during the selection show.
D&E will face Saginaw Valley State of the GLIAC on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. ET. Ohio Valley will player the winner on Sunday with a 1 p.m. ET scheduled start.
Teams from the same region will be paired for first- and/or second-round competition, which will be conducted November 9-12 on campus sites.
Third-round/quarterfinals will be held on campus sites and completed by November 19. The semifinals and final will be played November 30 and December 2 at Children’s Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri, hosted by Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Rockhurst University and Kansas City Sports Commission.
In the 2016 championship, Wingate University claimed the program’s first national title with a 2-0 victory over University of Charleston (WV) becoming the first national champion in its conference.
