INDIANAPOLIS - With only two weeks left in the regular season, teams are still battling for position in the conference standings entering Week 10.
Frontrunners Findlay and Ohio Dominican are leading the way and the stage is set for a conference championship showdown next week, but other teams are still trying to finish strong down the stretch.
The first of four games this Saturday will start at noon in Columbus as Ohio Dominican (5-3, 5-0 G-MAC) will look to remain undefeated in the conference in a matchup with Kentucky Wesleyan (2-6, 1-4 G-MAC).
Two of the top three passers in the G-MAC will square off in this game, as Kentucky Wesleyan’s Mike McGee enters this game with the third most passing yards in the conference to go with 18 touchdown passes. Thirty-five of his completions have gone to junior Ladarrius Dunn. Dunn has racked up 568 yards and five touchdown catches on the season as well.
Ohio Dominican’s league-leading passing offense will take the field looking to continue its dominance against conference teams thus far. The Panthers enter the game with five consecutive wins behind one of the best in the league, senior Grant Russell. Russell leads the conference with almost 2,500 yards through the air to go along with 19 touchdown passes.
The first of three games with a 1 p.m. ET kickoff will feature two teams that have excelled at controlling time of possession this season with Walsh (2-7, 2-3 G-MAC) traveling to Lake Erie (2-6, 2-3 G-MAC) to take on the Storm. The two teams have productive ground games and rank second and third in time of possession, respectively.
The Cavaliers will bring their second-ranked rushing offense into this matchup. Walsh has had the most success converting the running game in the red zone, scoring 16 rushing TD’s. Antwand Wilson leads Walsh with five rushing touchdowns on just 34 rushing attempts.
They will face off against Lake Erie, who won their contest last week against Kentucky Wesleyan 45-27. They will try to shut down the efficient red zone offense on Walsh with their defense, which ranks third in the conference on stopping teams in the red zone, allowing a score just 76.5 percent of the time.
Week 9 Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week will take the field for the Storm. Jason Rogers leads the conference in sacks with eight sacks in eight games and Mike Muzic is second in the conference with seven field goals made this season.
Findlay (8-1, 5-0 G-MAC) will also look to remain undefeated in the conference and continue its impressive seven-game winning streak on Senior Day as host to defending Great Midwest champion Alderson Broaddus (2-7, 1-4 G-MAC).
The Battlers will try to stop a three-game losing streak while attempting to hand Findlay its first loss since Sept. 9 against Ferris State. Freshman Patrick Bentley made his first career start last week against Hillsdale and ended up throwing for 344 yards and two touchdowns.
The Oilers will try to combat that with the league’s best defense in both rushing and passing categories, outscoring conference opponents this season 258-33 in a dominating fashion. Findlay is nationally ranked in two different national polls and is slotted at fourth in NCAA Super Region One.
Findlay boasts the top rusher in the conference in senior Daouda Sylla. He is the only player in the conference with more than 1,000 rushing yards on the season with 1,132 to go with 15 touchdowns.
The final game will pit Malone (1-7, 1-4 G-MAC) against Hillsdale (5-4, 3-2 G-MAC) on Senior Day for the Chargers and will feature two of the top receivers this season in the league.
Malone sophomore Ashton Dulin ranks second in receiving yards in the conference with 887 on 46 receptions. He also leads the G-MAC in all-purpose yards, putting up 169.5 yards per game. Dulin has also caught seven of Malone’s nine passing touchdowns this season.
The Chargers are coming off a 37-31 victory over Alderson Broaddus and feature Week 9 Offensive Player of the Week in junior Trey Brock. He caught nine passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns last week and he leads the conference in receiving yards with 1,048 and receptions with 66. He also has the second-most receiving touchdowns with eight.
