Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week (Nov. 20)

INDIANAPOLIS – Ursuline senior forward Laney Lewis (Lynchburg, OH / Lynchburg-Clay HS) was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.
 
The two-time Great Midwest Player of the Year (2016, 2017) received her fifth career weekly athlete of the honor after the Arrows beat West Liberty and scored a regional win against Saginaw Valley State.
 
Lewis averaged a triple-double through both contests with impressive averages of 19 points, 13.5 rebounds and 11 assists per game. She also averaged three blocks and 2.5 steals in both wins for Ursuline.
 
Ursuline, the Great Midwest preseason coaches poll favorite, improved to 2-2 overall after starting the year against Ferris State and No. 21 Michigan Tech in more Midwest Regional action.
 
Lewis recorded a double-double as the Arrows eclipsed the century mark in scoring as a team against West Liberty for their first win of the season. She had 23 points and dished out 11 assists to go with seven rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
 
On the road at Saginaw Valley State, she had a monster performance with 15 points, 20 rebounds and 11 more assists to her teammates. It was her second time with 20 rebounds since Nov. 2016 against Lake Erie and the seventh time a player has 20 or more boards in a single game.
 
In four games, Lewis is shooting over 49 percent from the field while averaging 19.5 points, 14.3 rebounds and eight assists per game. She is the current league leader in rebounding and assists.
 
Lewis is ranked fifth all-time among career players in Great Midwest history in scoring (1,119 points), rebounds (913) and blocked shots (152). Her passing prowess in the post has also translated to 282 assists (8th) and her 429 field goals made ranks fourth.
