HILLSDALE, Mich. – West Division powers Findlay and Hillsdale both advanced through the semifinals of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship bracket on Friday in the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.
The top two seeds and co-West Division champs are set for what many believed to be a collision course in the championship final to ultimately determine the conference tournament champ and the NCAA Championship automatic-qualifying bid.
No. 2 seed Findlay worked through the top half of the bracket and swept No. 1 (East) Lake Erie in straight sets. First team all-conference outside hitter Amanda Winner spiked a match-high 19 kills in just three games to pace the Findlay offensive attack.
The Oilers also improved to 27-5 overall on the season. Findlay started its playoff run on Thursday with a win over No. 3 (East) Malone in the opening round.
Hillsdale fed off the home crowd, the presence of Charlie the Charger (mascot) and a lively student section to take down No. 2 (East) Walsh in four sets.
The Cavaliers stretched the first tourney contest to four games with a win in the third set, but the Chargers’ Jackie Langer had a night to remember.
Langer, a senior outside hitter on a roster laden with young talent, had 22 kills, 14 digs and a handful of blocks while hitting .341.
Findlay and Hillsdale split their divisional showdowns in the regular season, which included a 3-2 UF win and a 3-0 sweep by Hillsdale before entering the postseason.
The Great Midwest Championship final will start at 4 p.m. ET with video streamed on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
