G-MAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week (Jan. 3)

1.3.17

INDIANAPOLIS – Kentucky Wesleyan senior guard Brittany Wells was picked as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week to start 2017 on Tuesday.

This marks Wells’ second career conference weekly honor after a Jan. 3, 2016, selection in her junior campaign.

The Panthers have stormed out with a 9-1 record in non-conference play and all of those wins have been assembled in consecutive order after a narrow season-opening overtime setback against Drury.

Included are a pair of victories against Missouri-St. Louis and a win against Illinois Springfield in regional play. KWC is outscoring opponents by over 11 points per game this year.

Wells is currently among the nation’s top scorers, tied with G-MAC counterpart Stephanie Wooten (Davis & Elkins) at seventh overall with 21.5 points per game.

She has paced Kentucky Wesleyan and been the team’s leading scorer in nine of the 10 games played so far.

In two games since the last weekly selection, Wells averaged 25 points in a pair of contests against Illinois Springfield and Asbury while shooting over 54 percent from the field. She also contributed five rebounds, 2.5 assists and three steals per game.

Wells was sharp as she was 11-of-20 from the field with a game-high 26 against UIS. She scored 24 points in as many minutes against Asbury with another good shooting effort at 8-for-15.

In her career from 2014-17, Wells is a top-20 career scorer in the G-MAC with 728 points heading into conference play.
