GREENWOOD, Ind. - Just like the Senator women, the men from Davis & Elkins reeled in both Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week awards on Monday.
Two freshmen had D&E absolutely on fire last week as the Senators took care of business at home against conference-leading Ohio Valley and reigning G-MAC champion Cedarville.
G-MAC Offensive Player of the Week
#9 Tim Staerz
Davis & Elkins College
Forward
Freshman
Bad Nauheim, Germany
Staerz led all players in the conference with five points this past week as D&E went 2-0 to gain six points in the conference standings and move into a tie for second in the season to date.
The German forward scored twice in the first half against Cedarville, including the eventual game-winner cashed in during the 29th minute.
Staerz also got the Senators on the board first with a goal in the first two minutes of regulation.
He factored into all three goals against the Yellow Jackets' defense, including the assist on Alex Samarzich score late in the second half.
G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week
#28 Hedi Mehnaoui
Davis & Elkins College
Goalkeeper
Freshman
Chateny Malabry, France
Mehnaoui steered two defensive efforts in net as he pitched a shutout to hand Ohio Valley its first conference loss of the season.
He made six saves against Ohio Valley to preserve a clean sheet in a tightly-contested battle on Thursday against the Fighting Scots.
He only allowed a penalty kick in the game against Cedarville, being called into action for three saves in that game.
