CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Cedarville claimed the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title for the second straight year following the two-day event.
The Yellow Jackets finished on top of the five-team women’s competition with 226 points. 2014 champion Ursuline was the runner-up with 120 points.
Kentucky Wesleyan was just five points away from second place with 115 points and only one point separated Alderson Broaddus (74) and Trevecca Nazarene (73) from fourth and fifth.
Various meet records across the board impressively fell for both genders despite relentless rain that came down on Saturday. The typical short-sleeve gear for an outdoor meet was replaced by leggings, jackets and umbrellas, as student-athletes tried to stay dry.
Ursuline claimed two of the individual award winners as voted upon by the league’s coaches. Kayla Cool received G-MAC Field Athlete of the Year and Janelle Perry completed the indoor/outdoor sweep as G-MAC Freshman of the Year.
Also winning indoor/outdoor honors for G-MAC Track Athlete of the Year was Trevecca Nazarene’s sophomore Caroline Hampton.
G-MAC Coach of the Year honors went to Cedarville’s Jeff Bolender once again.
Over half of the 20 events scored in the women’s competition experienced new meet records.
Cedarville’s Mariah Cruise and her new distance in discus highlighted the throws. Throwing events in recent history have been dominated by Kentucky Wesleyan’s Crystal Hopkins/Cornelia Thomas. Hopkins was able to win the hammer throw and set a new record in the process.
Additional meet records falling were the pole vault, long jump, 10K race, 3K steeplechase, 1,500-meter run, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay.
Cedarville’s Lyndsey Smith was the only student-athlete to break two records in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. She broke the 200-meter dash mark in both her preliminary mark and her final time.
Hampton shattered her own 10K record and Cool had a busy weekend in the field events. She won triple jump, finished second in javelin and pole vault, placed third in long jump and earned sixth in discus. Cool already holds the G-MAC Championship record in the javelin throw from 2015.
