INDIANAPOLIS – Another sports team in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference is making history following Monday’s announcement of Trevecca Nazarene qualifying for the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Super Regional.
The Trojans are headed to Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill., on May 2-4.
The TNU women’s pick marks the first super regional bid for the G-MAC and follows the Trevecca Nazarene men’s golf at-large team selection announced over the weekend.
The top three teams in the 12-team women’s field with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships in Aurora, Colo., scheduled for May 18-21.
The Trojans are coming off their fourth consecutive G-MAC Championship title (in as many years) recently secured at Four Bridges Country Club in Middletown, Ohio.
Junior Alexa Rippy is no stranger to the super regional format after showcasing her skills last year as an individual. This time, she has company -- and the Trojans are out to validate the committee’s selection.
Seniors Mikayla Dodson, Kaylon King and Marlee Stecker, with freshman Haley Smith and Rippy, provide a formidable lineup for head coach David Head in just his second season.
The NCAA Women’s Golf Championships will be part of the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships Festival. Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Denver Sports Commission will serve as the hosts.
The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition.
In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score. The number of participants that qualify for the finals is 72.
A total of four teams from the GLIAC, six from the GLVC (including reigning national champion Indianapolis), one from the PSAC and Trevecca Nazarene, comprise the East Super Regional field. Six Individuals were additionally selected to compete.
