MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – For the fourth straight year, Trevecca Nazarene emerged on top of the team standings as the final round of the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship finished Tuesday.
The Trojans carded a team total of 312 to finish with a tournament score of 633. All five TNU golfers managed to finish in the top six of the final individual standings.
"It was a great couple days for the Trojans," said TNU head coach David Head. "I couldn't be more proud of the team. We set out to accomplish a goal and we were able to accomplish it."
Capturing medalist honors for the second straight year was TNU junior Alexa Rippy, who matched her first round score and finished with a strong two-day total of 148 (74-74).
Rippy, who earned her sixth career tournament win, led wire-to-wire in the 36-hole event and won by 12 strokes. She led by seven strokes at the end of the first round.
"I felt good about my round today," Rippy said. "I played pretty simple hitting a lot of fairways and a lot of greens and just making pars. I thought if I could just make a lot of pars today then that would be good enough and so I'm really glad that my hard work from this year has paid off again."
Some of her tournament-leading stats included five birdies and 25 pars. She carded the lowest score on all three hole categories and was under par on par 3’s and par 5’s.
Rippy headlined this year’s all-conference squad and was joined by teammates Kaylon King, Marlee Stecker and Mikayla Dodson. Dodson (2013) and King (2014) are also both previous G-MAC Championship medalists.
The G-MAC All-Conference Team consisted of the top five scored individuals while five more and individual award winners will be added by the coaches following a vote.
Ursuline’s Kennedy Fay (85-78--163) enjoyed a strong two-round stretch to also make the list. The Arrows of Ursuline surged from fourth to second as they played their final 18.
Ursuline trailed Alderson Broaddus and Ohio Valley heading into today, but made up significant ground and posted a 341 (20-stroke differential) to finish.
Alderson Broaddus finished third with a team score of 712 (354-358). Julia Heser and Savannah Jackson each finished in the top 10 at seventh and eighth, respectively. Jackson was tied for second heading into today’s round.
In fourth place was Ohio Valley (360-361--721) as the Fighting Scots were paced by Evette Booker’s ninth-place finish. She was consistent with a pair of 87’s posted.
The Trevecca Nazarene women are currently ranked ninth in the NCAA East Region rankings and enhanced their case to get a team bid to regionals, which could potentially be the first in G-MAC history.
The conference has yet to experience a champion or a medalist from other than Trevecca Nazarene. The coveted ‘four-peat’ by the Trojans was also matched by the TNU men.
