4.19.16

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Salem International senior catcher Katie Chryssofos and Kentucky Wesleyan junior pitcher Casey Smith were named as the 12th set of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Chryssofos continued to mash the ball at a prodigious rate over the past week with six more homers while Smith put together a clean streak of 18 consecutive scoreless innings for the Panthers.

For the third time this spring, Chryssofos was named the G-MAC Player of the Week with impressive power numbers to show once again.

As the weather gets warmer, the senior slugger’s bat continues to heat up. This time, she slugged six home runs in just 10 games to the tune of a .360 batting average to go with 13 RBI, five runs scored and nine walks drawn.

She officially shattered the conference’s single-season record for home runs with No. 14 and added her 15th of the season against Cedarville on Saturday.

She had a monster game to kick off the series against Ohio Valley by slugging two home runs and driving in six as part of a 2-for-3 line at the plate. The Fighting Scots chose to walk her in all four plate appearances in game two – resulting in no official at-bats.

Chryssofos also put a charge in the ball for homers against Alderson Broaddus and twice against Cedarville.

Her positional versatility was also on display as she played multiple games at second base and in right field as the Tigers dealt with multiple injuries.

Chryssofos is currently the G-MAC’s career leader in RBI (126) and home runs (39) and has moved into a tie for first in total bases (273).

Smith was electric in three games, stringing together 18 scoreless innings and picking up all three possible winning decisions.

She pitched a pair of complete-game shutouts against Alderson Broaddus and fired four scoreless frames against Oakland City.

In the three games, Smith gave up no runs on 11 hits, walked four and struck out eight.

Smith pitched a pair of no-hitters in 2015 that resulted in a pair of conference pitcher of the week selections. This spring, she has helped the Panthers’ cause as KWC sits second in the G-MAC standings at 13-5.

In 22 total games, Smith has compiled a 2.98 ERA to go with eight wins and nine complete games in just over 103 innings pitched.
