GREENWOOD, Ind. – Trevecca Nazarene senior guard Byron Sanford was named the 11th Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for 2015-16 on Monday.
This is Sanford’s third career G-MAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week award (second this season) after receiving the same honor in December of 2014. The do-it-all guard continues to make his case for conference player of the year consideration.
Sanford and the Trojans went 3-0 on their home court as they defeated three conference teams (No. 18 Kentucky Wesleyan, Ohio Valley, Salem International) to improve their record to 9-11 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
The Trojans handed the nationally-ranked Panthers their first conference loss to make it a three-way tie between TNU, KWC and Alderson Broaddus, for first in the conference standings.
Sanford was part of a balanced scoring effort in the re-scheduled game at home versus Kentucky Wesleyan as he contributed 11 points and seven rebounds to help guide the upset.
The Trojans interrupted a six-game win streak by Kentucky Wesleyan in Nashville.
Sanford scored in bunches against the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley as he poured in 29 points in 29 minutes. With those numbers, he also had a double-double with 12 rebounds (five offensive) for the night. He also dished out six assists.
Once again, Sanford lit up the scoreboard against Salem International as he put up 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting. He added six rebounds and four assists.
In 20 games this season, Sanford ranks second in the G-MAC in scoring (22.7 ppg). He ranks fourth in rebounds, averaging nearly eight per game. Sanford is in a three-way tie for first in assists per game (4.1) and is tied for first in steals (1.8).
