INDIANAPOLIS - Some additional star-studded performances highlighted another wave of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Football Players of the Week as announced on Monday by the league.
The storylines became more intriguing as the regular season comes close to a conclusion.
Kentucky Wesleyan was able to beat Malone in the second G-MAC game of the season to set up a showdown on Saturday at Alderson Broaddus with all the marbles on the line.
The Panthers or Battlers will get the opportunity hoist both trophies for the second annual G-MAC Founders Cup and the inaugural G-MAC Championship in Philippi.
G-MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Brandon Jones
Alderson Broaddus University
Running Back
Senior
Williamsburg, VA
Jones was tabbed for offensive weekly honors for the second time this season. This time he was a wrecking ball in the ground game that translated to a win against Charleston from the Mountain East Conference.
The Battlers improved to 6-2 (8-2 including non-countable contests as determined by the NCAA) and Jones continued his torrid senior season with 232 yards rushing and led the Battlers with 50 yards receiving.
Jones reeled off scoring runs of 45, 8 and 33 yards, against Charleston. He scored twice in the fourth quarter and reeled off the game's first touchdown to cap a six-play, 77-yard drive.
Jones surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, sitting now at 1,071. He leads the G-MAC in rushing attempts, yards, touchdowns and yards per game.
G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Michael Malone
Kentucky Wesleyan College
Linebacker
Junior
Louisville, KY
Malone racked up 16 tackles, eight solo and eight assisted, as the Panthers stepped up in a big way to slow down a different Malone, the Pioneers and KWC's G-MAC opponent.
Malone also had a sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss in the outing. His 16 tackles officially ranks second most in a single game this year around the league following 19 recorded by Josh Correll of Malone vs. Alderson Broaddus.
G-MAC Special Teams Player of the Week
Keelan Cole
Kentucky Wesleyan College
Wide Receiver
Senior
Louisville, KY
Cole ran back a 98-yard kickoff return to the house as Kentucky Wesleyan was able to win its first G-MAC game of the season against Malone.
It was his second kickoff return this season for a score after bringing an 81-yarder against Davidson. Cole also caught three touchdown passes in the offensive effort and finished with 295 all-purpose yards to celebrate Senior Day in Owensboro.
This is Cole's second nod as G-MAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week this season.
