ELKINS, WV – The top two seeds in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship bracket were taken down in semifinal action as No. 3 Cedarville and No. 4 Alderson Broaddus were both winners on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets and Battlers will meet in Saturday’s final at Nuttall Field set for a 2 p.m. EST start.
Cedarville and Alderson Broaddus were also the 2015 G-MAC Championship finalists and their playoff success continued with both considered the underdogs this time around.
The Yellow Jackets clipped the Battlers in PK’s to end the tourney last year and Saturday’s looming final has all of the ingredients to be a another memorable finish. Live video (no audio commentary) and live stats will be streamed for coverage.
In the early game, Alderson Broaddus beat top seed, tourney host and regular-season champ Davis & Elkins, 3-1. Cedarville eliminated No. 2 Ohio Valley under the lights in the nightcap in a 2-1 final.
The Battlers had a balanced offensive showcase and ultimately had the answer as they countered the first goal of the game by D&E’s Benjamin Pastur in the 22nd minute.
Aldesron Broaddus rattled off three unanswered goals in the second half, including a pair in quick-strike form. Daniel Yague knotted the game at 1-1 in the 54th minute before Fernando Franco and Michael Gallardo scored less than three minutes apart in the latter stages.
Gallardo also was credited with the assist on Franco’s eventual game winner.
Two premier players in the league who did not suit up for this game due to injury included G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl (D&E) and G-MAC Freshman of the Year Ashley Sibisi (AB).
Cedarville, now winners in six of its last seven, broke open a scoreless stalemate just a little over one minute into the second half.
Jon Brown scored his third goal of the season before Derek Braak put away his fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Braak’s goal was essential for the Yellow Jackets putting this one away after the Fighting Scots drew within one following Alexander Einsmann’s goal midway through the second half.
