2016 G-MAC All-Conference Men's Soccer Team (PDF)
ELKINS, WV – For the first time, in front of their peers, members of the remaining programs in the tournament bracket were recognized as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team was unveiled Wednesday night.
As voted upon by the coaches, a total of 23 student-athletes were recognized to either the first, second or all-freshman teams.
Eleven selections were made to the first and second teams while the all-freshman team consisted of seven student-athletes.
The team banquet last night featured the top four seeds in the G-MAC Championship bracket in attendance: No. 1 Davis & Elkins, No. 2 Ohio Valley, No. 3 Cedarville and No. 4 Alderson Broaddus.
Ohio Valley led all G-MAC teams with a total of seven different student-athletes represented, each of them on the all-conference second team.
Individual awards were also presented for the G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year, G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year, G-MAC Freshman of the Year and G-MAC Coach of the Year.
Alderson Broaddus junior
Shavon John-Brown (Brooklyn, NY) was named the G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year. John-Brown tied with two others as the league leader in goals scored with eight and finished second in points with 21. He also had five assists.
John-Brown’s postseason impact was felt as the Battlers moved into the semifinals after beating No. 5 Trevecca Nazarene in Philippi last weekend. John-Brown scored and had an assist in his first playoff experience.
The Battlers collected more hardware with G-MAC Freshman of the Year
Ashley Sibisi (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe).
Sibisi also tied for the league lead in goals scored with his teammate John-Brown and Trevecca Nazarene’s Nicolas Reinhard. He tied Reinhard for the league lead in points with 22 after finishing his rookie campaign with an impressive eight goals and six assists.
John-Brown and Sibisi were both part of a talented class of newcomers for head coach Scott Phipps and his staff this season.
Tournament host and regular-season champion Davis & Elkins also had representation for coaching and defensive honors.
First-year head coach
Frank Olszewski organized a season that included a 10-3-3 overall record and a 9-2-1 run through G-MAC in the regular season. His Senators are 7-2-1 in their last 10 and home-field advantage could go a long way in bringing home a potential tournament title trophy to D&E.
One of his key ringleaders was G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year
Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl (Haltern, Germany), a veteran senior leader who helped the Senators pitch a total of six shutouts in his final season.
From 2013-to date, Grosse-Puppendahl has recorded 41 points to rank seventh all-time in conference history. He has scored 19 goals and seven of those have been in game-winning fashion.
Additional graphics for all men’s soccer all-conference performers will be posted in the near future as pictures become available.
