G-MAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week (Nov. 28)

11.28.16

INDIANAPOLIS - For the second straight time, Ursuline’s junior forward Laney Lewis was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday.

Lewis and the Arrows defeated incoming G-MAC school Lake Erie over the holiday layover before falling in a tough one against No. 5 Cal (PA) on Sunday. She entered the week as the NCAA Division II leader in rebounds at 16.2 per contest.

Lewis put up staggering numbers in both contests combined, averaging 26 points, 16.5 rebounds, seven assists and 3.5 blocks per game, all while shooting over 66 percent from the field.

On Tuesday at Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio, Lewis torched the Storm with 24 points and 21 rebounds on 11-of-16 shooting. She made both three-point field goals tried and dished out eight assists to go with eight blocks.

Lewis’ 21 rebounds is tied for the third-most in a single game in conference history, matching 21 pulled in by Jorden Lykes (Davis & Elkins) back in 2014.

Against a nationally-ranked Vulcans’ program at home, Lewis posted another double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds on 11-of-17 shooting. She distributed six more assists and added three steals and a block.

Lewis also made all six shots from the free-throw line as her already impressive 2015-16 G-MAC Player of the Year campaign appears to have been taken to the next level in eye-opening fashion.

The Arrows are now 4-2 on the season and Lewis is now averaging 17.7 ppg and 15.5 rpg for the year. She is currently second in the league in both assists and blocks.
