INDIANAPOLIS – Six teams will compete for the fifth annual Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship this year after the regular season closed with plenty of intrigue on Tuesday night.
The road to championship glory will run through Elkins, W.Va., after the Senators (10-3-3, 9-2-1 G-MAC) secured hosting responsibilities, the top seed and one of two first-round byes.
The semifinals and championship final will be held at Nuttall Field on Thursday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 5. Quarterfinals will be played this Saturday, Oct. 29, at Cedarville and Alderson Broaddus.
The conference is working with the host institution to determine a viable option for a broadcast and video stream with live stats. Details are currently pending at the time of release.
The race to determine a regular-season champion came down to the final day as Davis & Elkins beat Alderson Broaddus on the road to secure 28 total conference points (3 for a win, 1 for a tie).
But the drama unfolded earlier in the day when Ohio Valley pulled into a tie for first with D&E after tying Cedarville in a double-overtime draw. In a challenging road environment and knowing what was at stake, the Senators responded with a statement win against the Battlers to wrap up hosting responsibilities.
After Kentucky Wesleyan clinched the final seed over the weekend, the only question was the potential of fluctuating seeding depending on how the top four seeds fared against each other in their regular-season finale.
Ohio Valley (11-5-1, 8-3-1 G-MAC) will be idle this weekend to receive the other first-round bye as the No. 2 seed Fighting Scots await the winner of No. 3 Cedarville and No. 6 Kentucky Wesleyan.
Cedarville (9-6-3, 7-3-2 G-MAC) and Kentucky Wesleyan (3-13-0, 2-10-0 G-MAC) will start their quarterfinal matchup at 5:30 p.m. EST. The Yellow Jackets are gunning for their fourth straight conference tournament title; two of the past three G-MAC Championship finals have been determined by PK’s.
In the other quarterfinal, No. 4 Alderson Broaddus (8-7-2, 7-5-0 G-MAC) hosts No. 5 Trevecca Nazarene (7-9-1, 5-6-1 G-MAC) at 7:30 p.m. EST in Philippi, also on Saturday but with a 7:30 p.m. start under the lights.
The winner of AB and TNU will then travel to face Davis & Elkins with a start time of 4 p.m. EST on Saturday. The other semifinal contest will follow at 7 p.m. EST while the championship final is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. EST.
The 2016 G-MAC Men’s Soccer All-Conference Team will also be announced next week prior to the semifinal contests. A team banquet will be conducted on Wednesday evening with the four remaining programs left in the bracket.
