GREENWOOD, Ind. – Ohio Valley sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Rubio was named the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for the fall on Tuesday.
Rubio pitched a pair of shutouts in net as the Fighting Scots blanked Pitt-Johnstown and Ohio Dominican during the opening week of competition.
Ohio Valley is flourishing under first-year head coach Luis Rincon after enduring a winless 2014 campaign.
Rubio slowed down Pitt-Johnstown in his fall debut by making one save and stopped eight more shots against Ohio Dominican, a future G-MAC institution in 2017-18.
Despite being outshot by ODU, 14-8, the Fighting Scots found a way to win in the 67th minute. On Thursday afternoon, OVU converted a penalty kick that led to the final decision.
The Fighting Scots are enjoying a 2-0 start, the program’s best since joining the NCAA Division II ranks. OVU snapped a 17-match skid in the process to rack up its first wins since beating Pitt-Johnstown at the end of 2013.
Ohio Valley breaks into the conference schedule on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., hosting Cedarville in Vienna.
