XENIA, Ohio – Three more compelling games went final at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Championship, including a pair of contests that set the stage for dramatic finishes in extras.
Saturday’s G-MAC Championship final is a collision course for top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene and second-seeded Cedarville.
The Trojans and Yellow Jackets will face each other on field one at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex for a 12 p.m. first pitch. In the event Cedarville would win, the two teams would play each other again at 2 p.m. on field one since the Trojans would have suffered their first loss of the tournament.
TNU improved to 3-0 in the conference tournament while Cedarville played an extra game while carving its path for a chance to play the Trojans by beating No. 6 Salem International and No. 4 Davis & Elkins.
The Tigers, which split on Thursday and the Senators, winners of games vs. the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds yesterday, both exited the double-elimination bracket.
Shelby Andrews delivered the walk-off RBI hit with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, plating Kelsey Kemp, who led off the frame with a double.
The game-winning run sent Haley Fagan to her 20th win of the season. Fagan, the G-MAC Pitcher of the Year was brilliant once again, striking out 12 hitters in nine innings of work while giving up just one run on four hits.
Following a 1-1 tie in the third inning, Fagan and D&E starter Allie Lapallo exchanged five consecutive scoreless innings Andrews went opposite field to end it.
In Cedarville’s first game of the day, Logan Eppich homered for the second straight day, this time racing around the bases to leg out an inside-the-park home run that was a screaming line drive down the line.
Eppich’s hard shot went on the artificial turf surface by diving attempts by both the third baseman and left fielder. Nicole Davis had three hits with a triple and Brianne O’Dell doubled as part of a two-hit game.
Salem International made things as interesting as possible down the stretch, loading the bases with two outs in the seventh with the tying run at the plate. The Tigers were able to push across two runs in the first inning, but CU’s Emily Cornish tossed the complete game, giving up a pair of runs while striking out three.
Elyssa Reyes was the fitting Yellow Jacket to deliver the walk-off hit in the 10th inning against Davis & Elkins with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. Reyes was 4-for-5 with two doubles and her single to right scored Christina Kirkpatrick.
The Senators were unable to capitalize with runners at the corner and one out but led twice in different innings. Cece Gummel tossed 10 complete innings, going above and beyond for the win. She was touched for one earned run on just five hits.
