XENIA, Ohio – A total of six games were completed during the first day of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex on Thursday.
What started as a patient journey through the double-elimination bracket for six teams has turned into aspirations for four as the field was trimmed down by two.
Fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins with No. 1 seed Trevecca Nazarene both went 2-0 on the day. The Senators pulled off a pair of upsets and served the role of bracket buster early on, beating No. 3 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 2 Cedarville.
D&E and TNU will meet tomorrow at noon on field one. Friday’s games are scheduled to start at noon, 2:45 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Also playing tomorrow is No. 2 Cedarville vs. No. 6 Salem International after both teams respectively split during the day. The winner between Cedarville/Salem International would face the loser between Trevecca Nazarene and Davis & Elkins.
Officially eliminated from contention were No. 3 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 5 Alderson Broaddus.
Kelsey Kemp drilled a three-run home run and struck out nine to lead the Trojans in the No. 1/6 seed morning matchup. TNU handed Salem International a 9-1 defeat in six innings.
The Trojans blanked KWC in the afternoon, riding a five-hit shutout from G-MAC Pitcher of the Year Haley Fagan. The junior ace struck out six while Bailey Alexander tripled and drove in a pair of runs.
For Davis & Elkins, Chelsie Stover hit the decisive two-run single while Katelyn Norton belted a solo home run to lift the Senators against the Panthers. KWC had beaten D&E four times during the regular season, including a pair of 1-0 decisions.
Cedarville’s Logan Eppich homered and swiped another base to add to her already prolific season totals as the Lady Jackets, near neighbors to Xenia about 15 minutes away, held off AB.
Salem International staved off elimination with a 10-run sixth inning, storming back from an eight-run deficit. All of the runs came with two outs and a three-run homer by Katie Chryssofos punctuated the rally.
Kayla Whoolery was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a pair of doubles as D&E broke open a 2-2 game with five runs to eventually beat Cedarville, 7-3. Allie Lapallo went the distance in the circle for both of D&E’s wins today.
