CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Cedarville’s women showcased its depth and talent across the board to claim the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship following Saturday’s festivities.
The Lady Jackets paced the six-team field with 269 points while 2014 outdoor/2015 indoor champion Ursuline was close behind with a 214.5 point total.
Alderson Broaddus (97.5) finished third, Trevecca Nazarene (74) came in fourth, Kentucky Wesleyan (52) was fifth and Central State (36) placed sixth overall, in the final team standings.
The second G-MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships were conducted on Cedarville's campus with picture-perfect sunny weather in the mid-70's for the duration of the event.
Cedarville’s Jeff Bolender was voted as the G-MAC Coach of the Year on the men’s and women’s side.
CU freshman standout Carsyn Koch won three events to earn G-MAC Freshman of the Year, Crystal Hopkins of Kentucky Wesleyan and Ruth Towne of Cedarville shared G-MAC Field Athlete of the Year and Ursuline’s Bea Indurain assumed her dominance with another selection as G-MAC Track Athlete of the Year.
Koch claimed three of Cedarville’s five individual titles on the day, besting her counterparts in the high jump, 400-meter dash and 800-meter run. She has already provisionally qualified in three different events this spring.
Hopkins was part of a strong day by the KWC throws crew with titles in the hammer throw and shot put. Towne figured into the mix by finishing runner-up in the javlin and hammer throw while finishing third in discus.
KWC also had another freshman win a throwing competition as Cornelia Thomas launched the discus 37.94 meters on her third attempt.
Indurain was perfect in all five events entered, taking home G-MAC medals in the long jump, triple jump, 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relays. Her time in the 100-meter hurdles ranks ninth nationally in all of Division II this spring.
Ursuline’s Kayla Cool was a multi-event winner in the pole vault and javelin. Jasmine Lett also won the 400-meter hurdles for the Arrows and Adaobi Mgdobille won the 200-meter dash.
Cedarville also won the 3,000-meter steeplechase thanks to Nicole Watterud and the 1,500-meter run from the legs of Olivia Esbenshade.
Like the men, Trevecca Nazarene’s distance prowess was on display as Biz Mclendon won the 10K and Caroline Hampton finished first in the 5K races.
