2015 Women’s Golf Preseason Coaches’ Poll - Spring Preview

3.20.15

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The 2014-15 Great Midwest Athletic Conference women's golf season is in its second year following the approval of the league being an active NCAA Division II conference.

Trevecca Nazarene University, who is currently in its first active NCAA season since its transition from the NAIA, returns as the defending G-MAC Champion, after capturing the weather-shortened title with 18-hole total of 345.

Last year’s championship was snowed for the final round of competition.

The 2014-15 season has a field of five teams participating for the second-straight year in the conference championship tournament that is hosted by the conference office at a neutral location.

The tournament will take place at the Four Bridges Country Club just north of Cincinnati on April 24-25.

Trevecca was identified as the team to beat again in 2014-15, topping the conference preseason coaches’ poll by earning three first-place votes from opposing coaches.

The Trojans captured the title last season over Ursuline, who was ranked second by the coaches with two first-place votes

Alderson Broaddus, which finished fourth in the G-MAC Championships last season, was tabbed third, while Ohio Valley and Kentucky Wesleyan rounded out the preseason rankings, respectively.

Alderson Broaddus

The Battlers had early-fall success finishing second at St. Vincent College with a score of 350 in the one-round event. AB had competitors finish first and third overall. The team also finished sixth of 10 teams the next weekend at Ohio Valley’s tournament. AB will look to get off to a good start in the spring when they head to Pepper Pike, OH in the Ice Cup Challenge hosted by Ursuline.

Natalie Perry fired the low round for Alderson Broaddus, posting a fall-best of 78 in the team’s first tournament of the season.

Kentucky Wesleyan

Kentucky Wesleyan did not officially complete a tournament during the fall despite entries at the Ohio Valley tournament and another event in Franklin, Ind., just a few miles away from the G-MAC league offices. Summer Newsome was atop the team leaderboard with an 84 through the first round at the Ohio Valley Invite. As of now, the Panthers are slated to compete in three events this spring for heading to the postseason at the conference tournament.

Ohio Valley

A young Fighting Scots program made strides through the fall while getting its feet wet with five different tournaments. OVU finished sixth at its own-hosted tournament while entertaining the likes of fellow G-MAC members Ursuline, Alderson Broaddus and Kentucky Wesleyan. Victoria Nichols tied for 19th on the par-71 layout, while Amanda Sabourin was just four strokes off her pace to earn a top-25 placing. Sabourin also carded a two-round total of 175 to lead OVU’s seventh-place team effort at the John Carroll Invitational in September.

Trevecca Nazarene

The Trojans excelled placed first in two of the five events in which they competed, and did not finish any lower than sixth other than the deep NCAA Division II National Preview Tournament. TNU shot 636 as a team to win the Gannon Invitational. When the team traveled to Georgia for the Chick-fil-A Invite, it recorded a score of 637 and finished fourth in the field. Trevecca Nazarene looks to defend its G-MAC title in 2015.

G-MAC Athlete of the Month Alexa Rippy rose to the occasion in several events, finishing in the top two for TNU in each tournament. Her best round for the fall season was a 74.

Ursuline

Ursuline finished in various positions across its five tournaments in the fall, but won the Ohio Valley Invite comprised of teams around the region and in the conference. The Arrows feature a balanced lineup with scores of 642 and 658 in two other tournaments against a tough field of 16 or 18 teams. Despite a score of 694 at the Mercyhurst Invitational, Ursuline still placed eighth of 16 teams in the top half of the field.

Chasey Rotando posted scores of 77 several times in the fall season. Eadaoin Cronin was also atop the team leaderboard, posting a strong round of 74.
