GREENWOOD, Ind. – The second week of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference softball campaign will feature another institution making its spring debut in addition to Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan.
Salem International joins the fray after TNU and KWC both made their presence felt at the Charger Chillout last weekend in Huntsville, Ala.
Casey Smith (KWC) and Ansley Brantley (TNU) were named the G-MAC’s Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, in the first conference weekly award selection of the season.
Kentucky Wesleyan compiled four wins in six games and the Trojans salvaged a tournament split in four contests, including a win over No. 5 Wayne State.

Wednesday, Feb. 11
Trevecca Nazarene (3-2) def. Lincoln Memorial, 8-0 (6 innings)

The Trojans played the role of spoiler for Lincoln Memorial's spring debut, ending the doubleheader an inning early. Reigning G-MAC Player of the Week Ansley Brantley homered to lead off the game and the TNU offense backed another dominant outing from Haley Fagan in the pitcher's circle. Brantley and Kelsey Kemp each scored three times at the top of the order and both also stole their second bases of the season. Fagan doubled and punched out seven hitters in a three-hit shutout.

The Railsplitters salvaged the split, coming back from a run down with a two-run third inning. LMU's Brianna Taylor outdueled TNU's Lindsey Stephens in the pitching matchup. Shelby Andrews hit her first home run this year, a solo shot to begin the second inning. Lincoln Memorial pieced together two runs on four hits in the third frame, the eventual winning run plated on an RBI single up the middle.

The Tigers fell short in their season debut despite a perfect 3-for-3 effort from freshman Alyssa Discepola with an RBI. Salem International held a 3-2 lead following the top of the third inning, but the Golden Bulls would tack on seven runs in the next two innings combined. Johnson C. Smith catcher (first name unknown) Jefferson doubled twice, had four hits and drove in five runs. SIU starter Kayla Lynch took the loss, yielding six runs in 2.1 innings pitched. The Tigers outhit the Bulls nine to seven.

Katie Holestin struck out six over a complete game as Salem International salvaged an opening day split. Katie Chryssofos drilled the team's first home run and was 3-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBI. Kayla Lynch and Alyssa Discepola each drove in two runs and SIU was able to take command with a 4-0 lead before the Golden Bulls got on the scoreboard. Hannah Crew also chipped in a run-scoring double.
Saturday, Feb. 14
Salem International (2-1) def. Shaw, 3-1

Kayla Lynch shut down the Shaw offense with 6.1 innings pitched while Katie Holeston preserved the win by recording the final two outs in a save situation. Cass Alexy, Katie Chryssofos and Alyssa Discepola, each had two hits as the Tigers pounded out 10 total -- all singles. Lynch tossed five consecutive scoreless innings as SIU staked her to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on Alexy's RBI single up the middle. The Tigers added insurance runs in the sixth off run-scoring hits from Jane Judware and Hannah Crew.

Salem International brought out the broom to complete the doubleheader sweep against Shaw behind another impressive performance from rising freshman Alyssa Discepola. Batting cleanup, Discepola doubled twice and drove in three runs as part of a 3-for-5 effort. The Tigers overcame an early three-run deficit after the first inning as Katie Holestin improved to 2-0 on the spring as the starter. SIU scored six runs in the fourth and added three more runs in the seventh.
