Shootout Sends Cedarville to Third Straight G-MAC Men’s Soccer Crown

11.7.15

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Top-seeded Cedarville lived up to its billing and the pressure that goes with, withstanding a strong test from No. 2 Alderson Broaddus in Saturday’s Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship final.

Almost 300 miles away in West Virginia where the CU women's team was taking care of business for the program's first G-MAC trophy, the Cedarville men followed suit to make it another banner day in Yellow Jackets' athletics.

The Yellow Jackets advanced by virtue of a 4-2 decision in penalty kicks after 110 minutes saw both teams deadlocked in a stalemate.

It marked the third consecutive men’s soccer conference trophy for Cedarville in the tourney’s four-year history after beating Davis & Elkins in 2013 and 2014.

Already ranked fourth in the Midwest Region, Cedarville enhanced its chances for seeding purposes before the NCAA selection show on Monday at 6 p.m. EST.

Without an AQ on the men’s side, Cedarville is looking to punch its ticket to the NCAA Division II Championship Midwest Regional as an at-large selection.

The Yellow Jackets were in a quick hole as the Battlers scored in the first minute of regulation.

The first 23 seconds produced an Alderson Broaddus goal as Marco Profumo capitalized on a back-line miscue by the Yellow Jackets.

Cedarville kept chipping away and eventually put home the equalizer midway through the second half on a shot from John Schwien, his first goal of the season that came in timely fashion.

Converted PK’s were made by two-time G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year Connor Gilmour, Schwien, Joel Twinem and Jon Brown, in order.

The Yellow Jackets advanced past No. 4 Ohio Valley in semifinal action while AB prevailed in a shootout of its own against No. 6 Davis & Elkins to make it to the championship game.

Cedarville’s overall record stands at 14-3-2 while AB, sitting in the Midwest Region rankings for the past three weeks, waits additional potential postseason qualifying at 10-6-3.
