ELKINS, W.Va. – The favored seeds did not prevail as No. 3 Ursuline and No. 4 Cedarville flipped the script in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals on Thursday.
Cedarville played the role of spoiler against No. 1 seed and tournament host Davis & Elkins in the early game while Ursuline surprised No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan by advancing in a shootout.
The Yellow Jackets and Arrows are slated to meet in Saturday’s G-MAC Championship final at 1 p.m. EST at Nuttall Field on the D&E campus.
Cedarville’s Alyssa Maillefer capitalized on the game’s only goal in the 97th minute, tapping in a pass from Jacoby Ziegler following a long run down the field.
Davis & Elkins had edged Cedarville in the two regular-season meetings, but the nation’s top scoring offense was held in check by the Yellow Jackets on its home turf.
Ursuline and Kentucky Wesleyan traded first-half goals off the feet of Aline Czaplicki and Breigh Haase before the remainder of regulation played out to a 1-1 tie.
Both overtime periods passed with neither team able to record the golden goal and each side lined up their shootout lineup for PK’s.
Nursing an injured hand, Ursuline keeper Helen Jazzar stopped two shots on KWC attempts while Vanessa Consiglio buried the clinching PK to send Ursuline back to familiar territory.
The Arrows are the defending G-MAC regular-season and tournament champions and the G-MAC’s first automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship is on the line and up for grabs.
