GREENWOOD, Ind. - Alderson Broaddus sophomore forward Angelo Cugini was named the second Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for 2015-16 on Monday.
Cugini helped the Battlers bring down a tough Bowie State program which received votes in the NABC Poll and was ranked No. 17 in the Division II Media Poll sponsored by D2SIDA.
Bowie State also beat NCAA Division I Hartford in the preseason schedule during exhibition action.
The 6-7 bruising big man carved out 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Batters in Rex Pyles Arena as they improved to 2-1.
Cugini played 33 minutes in a reserve role while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor. He made four three-point buckets and four of his 12 boards were on the offensive glass.
Cugini scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half as the Battlers worked to preserve a nine-point halftime cushion against the Bulldogs.
Next up for Alderson Broaddus is a non-conference contest against Ashland on Friday from Erie, Pa.
In three games, Cugini has emerged as AB’s second-leading scorer early in the season with a 14.3 ppg average. He is tied for the team lead in rebounding with Richard Lemon; both are averaging 8.7 rebounds per contest.
