G-MAC Snapshot Focus: Sept. 8-10

9.11.14

GREENWOOD, Ind. – After the dust settled from opening weekend around the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, team standings, statistical leaders and noticeable trends continue to take shape around the league.

As we near the start of the G-MAC schedule, the sports of men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and volleyball -- in their primary season – continue to stake their claim against non-conference competition.

The second edition of the G-MAC focus zeroes in on events from Sept. 8-10.

MEN'S SOCCER

Salem International’s first game of the season at Lake Erie resulted in a 1-0 shutout while Cedarville downed GLIAC opponent Malone. Trevecca was the lone league school not to compete this week to date.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 2-1 on the season as Connor Gilmour had a pair of goals, Connor Scott assisted on two others and Joel Twinem had a goal and an assist.

Four programs remain in search of their first win this season. Strength of schedule must be taken into consideration when analyzing Davis & Elkins’ start after facing regional powerhouses Tiffin University and Quincy University right out of the gates.

Yesterday, the Senators were tipped at their home field by Notre Dame on a bizarre sequence in the 57th minute that resulted in a goal scored in its own net.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Ursuline maintained its pace at the top of the standings at 2-1 with a shutout against West Liberty where Vanessa Consiglio, Paige Rowan and Taylor Dackin, all scored. Helen Jazzar finished with five saves in net for the Arrows.

Just like the men’s program, the Davis & Elkins women’s squad continues to collide with the nation’s best and hold its own. Following back-to-back double-overtime scoreless draws including now No. 6-ranked California (Pa.), the Senators will face their next test against Slippery Rock, which dropped out of the NSCAA Preseason Coaches Poll after starting the fall at No. 7.

Reigning G-MAC Athlete of the Week and goalkeeper Ashley Winkelspecht (Davis & Elkins) pitched her second consecutive shutout against Shepherd on Wednesday, making seven saves on 20 shots faced.

Trevecca was victorious against Sewanee last night while Cedarville, Salem International, Kentucky Wesleyan and Ohio Valley, have each suffered setbacks since Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

Tournament action is scheduled to resume again this weekend for the G-MAC as a light midweek schedule around the league has been played out.

Ursuline is now 3-1 having won three consecutive matches and leads the league in hitting percentage at a .312 clip. The Arrows are also league leaders in assists, speared by setter Molly Hilfinger (11.27 assists per set), and service aces.

Trevecca University recorded back-to-back home wins against Lee and G-MAC provisional member Cumberland. In those matches, Delaney Hearne has spiked down 21 kills with a .326 hitting percentage and setter Loren Bennett averaged 11.43 assists in seven sets. Hearne is second in the G-MAC in attacking percentage.

G-MAC Athlete of the Week Katelyn Atkinson has racked up 28 more kills, averaging 4.24 per set on the year to date, which would rank just outside the top 10 nationally in per-set averages (based off of final 2013 NCAA Division II statistical leaders) if she can sustain her torrid pace.

Cedarville collected a home win against pesky Ohio Dominican, riding the energy from a strong crowd as Amanda Bell had 13 kills and 18 digs. Both CU and ODU had a Tori/Tory Thompson make an impact on their team with the Yellow Jackets’ Tori finishing with nine kills and five blocks while the ODU Tory paced her team with 18 kills.

Salem International possesses the current G-MAC leaders in both digs (Jen Martinez) and service aces (Alessandra Marquez).

A combined 19 matches are scheduled for completion this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
