#3 Cedarville vs. #5 Davis & Elkins
Cedarville University, which played in the most exciting and final game of day one, and Davis & Elkins closed out the action on Friday with the most thrilling game of day two to cap the action. Cedarville advanced
In the bottom of the first, Davis & Elkins came into the game hitting on all cylinders, scoring three times and taking control of the contest early. A walk, a throwing error, a stolen base, and another error gave D&E a run and a pair of baserunners with no outs. Danielle Norton then capped the scoring with a two-run home run to left center.
Cedarville put a run on the board in the top of the third on a bunt single by Samantha Hayner who eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.
Two innings later, Cedarville captured its first lead of the game, scoring three times to take a 4-3 lead. Singles by Jessica Palm, Rachel Bull, and Christi Kirkpatrick with a wild pitch and a throwing error sprinkled in tied the game at 3-3. CU took a 4-3 lead on Kelsey Chapman’s RBI-single, which scored Kirkpatrick.
In the top of the sixth, a deep three-run home run to left field by Palm seemed to all but secure the victory for Cedarville, putting the Lady Jackets up 7-3. CU added a final run in the seventh that at the time didn’t seem that important but proved to be as D&E attempted a last inning rally. The bottom of the seventh start with five straight hits, highlighted by a three-run homer by Ashley Dove. D&E was able to get the tying run on first with one out, but a double-play ended the game, 8-6.
On the mound, Courtnie Spain started and threw just one inning, but it was her replacement Kelsey Chapman who secured things in the pitching circle for CU and allowed the offense to make its comeback.
#1 Trevecca Nazarene vs. #2 Kentucky Wesleyan
With a spot in the championship round and a game advantage going into the finals on the line, the top two seeds faced off against each other in game eleven of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Championships. #1 Trevecca Nazarene and #2 Kentucky Wesleyan each came into the game without a loss in the tournament, but only the defending champion Trojans left with the perfect mark, topping KWC 5-2.
After two and half scoreless innings, Trevecca Nazarene grabbed the lead as Ansley Brantley scored on an RBI single to shallow left field by Lindsay Stephens. Kentucky Wesleyan third baseman Ashley Crooke made a great grab and tag later in the inning at third base to save a run from scoring and keeping the Panthers close.
Kentucky Wesleyan responded in the top of the fourth as they capitalized on multiple errors by TNU. Amber Pendergraft reached base on an error and advanced to third on the very next play on another defensive mistake. She scored on a fielder’s choice by Ashley Crooke to tie the game at one.
The Panthers scored the go ahead run in the top of the fifth on a single to right field by Amber Pendergraft that scored Baumgart. However, the Trojans sealed the victory with a four-run explosion in the bottom of the inning.
Jordan Griner came to the plate first for Trevecca and drilled a home run over the left field fence to tie the game, lighting a fire under the Trojans. Kelsey Kemp singled to left and then stole second as she caught the Panthers off guard. An infield single by Lindsay Stephens put runners on the corners and Leding kept things going as she drilled a double off the shin of third baseman Crooke scoring Kemp for the go ahead run.
Trevecca added two more in the inning and took a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. Haley Fagan closed out the game holding the three run lead and picked up the win for Trevecca to put her team into the finals, as TNU looks to win its second-straight G-MAC title.
#3 Cedarville vs. #4 Alderson Broaddus
#3 Cedarville University eliminated the fourth seed Alderson Broaddus University in the second elimination game of day two at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
The Battlers had only one hit in the top of the first, but it was a big one as Regan Drake slammed the ball off the top of the center field fence for a solo home run giving AB the early 1-0 lead. AB added another run in the top of the second as Bianca Officer was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error committed by the Cedarville first baseman.
Cedarville responded and got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Shannon Muldowney and Carol Rice each singled to shallow left field and advanced on a wild pitch. Muldowney then scored as AB’s catcher, Whitney Brown overthrew her pitcher sending the ball into center field.
Cedarville tied the game up in the bottom of the third as the Battlers committed two fielding errors. A pair of hits and a sacrifice fly by Nicole Davis scored Rachel Bull.
With the game hanging in the balance in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets made their move picking up two runs to take the lead they would never give up. Nicole Davis and Kelsey Chapman reached base on singles and then Muldowney singled to centerfield scoring both Davis and Chapman.
The Battlers closed the gap on a Kylee Gaspar solo homerun to left center in the top of the sixth, but Cedarville scored three in the bottom of the inning on four hits including a double by Rachel Bull.
Cedarville pitcher, Courtnie Spain retired the Battlers in order at the top of the seventh to seal the 7-3 Yellow Jacket victory. Spain only gave up three hits and struck out five in the game.
(ALDERSON BROADDUS ELIMINATED IN FIFTH PLACE)
#5 Davis & Elkins vs. #6 Salem International
In the first elimination game of day two the Davis & Elkins Senators defeated Salem International 10-2 in five innings. Katie Mangold started the Tigers out with a single to right and Katie Chyrssofos homered to left field fence giving Salem an early 2-0 lead.
The Senators quickly rallied and took advantage of its opportunities in the bottom of the second as Salem walked two batters - Kayla Whoolery and Amber LaBille - and Kaitlyn Daugherty knocked in a run on a hit through the left side. Amanda Serafini followed with a hit to right scoring two and giving D&E the lead. Danielle Norton added an RBI-double to right field and the Senators led 4-2.
Davis & Elkins blew the game open in the fourth with five runs on six hits as Norton, Corrine Carrington, Whoolery, Chelsie Stover, LaBille, and Kaitlyn Daugherty each picked up hits in the inning for the Senators.
In the top of the fifth LaBille retired the Tigers in order, allowing D&E to finish off the game in the fifth. Ashley Dove started things off for the Senators with a single to center field and she eventually scored on Carrington single to deep right.
Davis & Elkins had 14 hits in the game including doubles by Danielle Norton (2) and Chelsie Stover. Amber LaBille pitched a complete game for the Senators giving up only five hits, no walks, and struck out four.
(SALEM INTERNATIONAL ELIMINATED IN SIXTH PLACE)
#2 Kentucky Wesleyan vs. #6 Salem International
Kentucky Wesleyan College advanced to the winners bracket championship game where they will face #1 Trevecca for a spot in the G-MAC Softball Championship Finals after they defeated #6 Salem International University, 9-4, in the second game of the winners bracket.
The Panthers took an early lead in the top of the first as Kaci Ovelgoenner hit a two run shot to put the Panthers up 2-0. The Tigers made some great defensive stops in the top of the second as they tried to change the momentum of the game. Kayla Guta had a diving grab at second base to make the play on Casey Smith at first and then Summer Clark then made an amazing diving grab in foul territory for the second out of the inning.
The Panthers picked up a third run in the top of the third as Miller started the inning with a hit to left field that she stretched into a double with some great hustle and heads up base running. Ashley Crooke also doubled in the inning scoring Miller.
The Panthers extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth, and in the bottom of the inning Salem was close to cutting into the lead with three hits, but no runs. In the top of the fifth Casey Smith hit a two run homerun to increase Kentucky Wesleyan’s lead to 7-1, basically securing the win for KWC. Each team added a couple more runs to close out the 9-4 win for the Panthers.
While KWC advances to face Trevecca Nazarene later in the day, Salem was forced to play the very next contest against Davis & Elkins with the loser being eliminated from the tournament.
#1 Trevecca Nazarene vs. #4 Alderson Broaddus
Top seeded Trevecca Nazarene defeated Alderson Broaddus University in the first game of day two of the G-MAC Softball Championships. The Trojans came from behind to take a 12-3 win from the Battlers.
Trevecca Nazarene grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Leding singled to lead off the inning and was later driven in by Megan Chesney.
Whitney Brown led off the bottom of the third with a single to right field for the Battlers. An overthrow from Lindsey Stephens at third base allowed Emily Morton to get on and Brown to advance to third. Patteson singled to the left side of the infield scoring Brown. Hannah Copenhaver wrapped up the scoring for ABU with a single to left field that scored Morton and Pattenson. The Battlers had three runs on three hits, though all were unearned with the error.
The Battlers seemed to be in control of the game, posting two quick outs in the fifth inning. However, an error kept the Trojans at the plate and they took advantage. Jordan Griner walked to put two baserunner on for TNU and Ansley Brantley came to the plate and hit a towering home run that had to go well over 60-80 feet beyond the 200 foot fence. The three run shot gave the Trojans a 4-3 lead.
Trevecca Nazarene extended their lead to 5-3 on two doubles in the top of the sixth and blew the game open in the seventh, scoring seven times on seven hits, including a pair of doubles by Kelsey Kemp and Lindsey Stephens.
Kelsey Kemp came to the mound in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game for the Trojans. She struck out three to end the game and help Trevecca advance through the winner’s bracket. G-MAC Pitcher of the Year Haley Fagan picked up the win for Trevecca. She only gave up five hits, walked two, and struck out nine in the game.
