SALEM, W.Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus men's basketball team recorded its sixth-straight victory, locked up the No. 1 overall seed in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament and captured the regular-season championship with Tuesday evening's 69-60 road win over Salem International University.
The Battlers (20-5, 12-1 G-MAC) will host the conference tournament which will begin on Thursday, March 6, at Rex Pyles Arena.
SIU shot 21 percent in the first period and the blue and gold locked down their leading scorer Walter Brock. Brock scored six points, but recorded three personal fouls in his 16 minutes of first half action.
Sophomore Richard Lemon notched his eighth double-double of the year and started his top offensive performance of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds before the break. He was 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 at the charity stripe.
The Battlers went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 13, 33-20, coming out of the break.
Brock, the Tigers' leading scorer, fouled out of Tuesday's game with 15:24 remaining in the contest. He finished with eight points, four rebounds and two blocks.
Lemon was ABU's top offensive weapon in the second half and scored 17 points to bring his total to 28 in the win. He also dished out four assists after the break and swiped a pair of steals.
Two other Battlers scored 10 or more points Tuesday evening. Sophomore Malcolm Tatum scored all 12 of his points in the second half and senior Adam Kline was 7-for-9 from the floor and finished with 14 points and seven boards.
ABU outrebounded the Tigers 49-41 and outscored the green and white 44-30 in the paint.
