G-MAC Week In Review: Nov. 26-Dec. 2

12.3.14

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Thanksgiving break has passed and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball league schedules are ready to take center stage this week.

For most of the teams around the G-MAC, one day after feasting on turkey and the traditional holiday dishes translated into preparing to get back on the court for various weekend tournament action.

Thursday’s conference-opening slate features doubleheaders between Kentucky Wesleyan at Ohio Valley and Trevecca on the road versus Salem International. Cedarville’s women will also tangle with Ursuline in Pepper Pike, Ohio.

After tuning up against marquee competition from across the country for a heavy dose of non-conference action, time will tell which teams will rise to the top of the standings in the coming months.

The Cedarville women remain red hot as winners of four straight and defending men’s tournament champion Alderson Broaddus has won four of its last five to begin the year.

A familiar face reaped G-MAC Athlete of the Week honors on the women’s side for her second selection (Raegan Ryan-Cedarville) while guard Ken-Jah Bosley of Kentucky Wesleyan grabbed a selection for the men.

The indoor track and field season also launches this week on Friday with Alderson Broaddus and Central State competing.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Trevecca (2-5) carved out a signature win against No. 25 Alabama-Huntsville on Monday, sending the Chargers tumbling to their first loss of the season after recently entering the national poll.

Four players scored in double figures as the Trojans took control early and ballooned their lead up to 18 points. Byron Sanford led the way with 23 points, including 10 makes at the free-throw line, to go with seven rebounds.

Trevecca was also on the short end of contests against McKendree and Missouri S&T in Nashville over the weekend.

Last night, Cedarville (2-6) held on against an underrated Ohio Christian squad with a one-point win at home as Jason Cuffee scorched the opposition from long range.

Cuffee was 9-of-12 from the field and against OCU and No. 5 Bellarmine, has drained 11 of 14 tries from beyond the arc.

Bellarmine flexed its muscle as one of the nation’s best against Cedarville as part of five G-MAC contests on Friday. Cuffee nailed six more three-pointers for the Yellow Jackets, but the unbeaten Knights shot nearly 62 percent from the field to approach the century mark in scoring with the 93-74 final.

Bosley led Kentucky Wesleyan to a split after toppling Grand Valley State and narrowly being edged out by Truman State in the KWC-hosted tourney. He averaged over 21 points per game, shot nearly 52 percent from the field and canned 21-of-23 tries at the charity stripe.

Alderson Broaddus (4-2) beat Gannon and fell to Slippery Rock. Last week’s athlete of the week Malcolm Tatum had 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds against Gannon while Paul Williamson launched seven made threes as part of his game-high 23 points in a reserve role.

The Yellow Jackets played Southern Indiana to the wire on Saturday, falling by just six points. CU led by five at the break but USI capitalized on their chances at the free-throw line, which turned out to be noteworthy discrepancy between the teams in the box score.

Davis & Elkins (2-3) only played one game but made it count with a 10-point victory at home against Bluefield. Both Alex Vasiljevic and Rashad Parker had double-doubles as the Senators controlled the glass with a +16 advantage.

Central State split in the past week, beating Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) while falling to Indianapolis. Raheem Lemons continues to assert himself as one of the best in the league, ranking ninth in scoring  (12.7 ppg) and third in rebounding (7.8 rpg) so far.

Salem International (0-4) continues to own the league’s top scoring offense at 82 points per game, but the Tigers were grounded by Hillsdale on Saturday and remain in search of their first victory this year.

Ohio Valley (0-3) continues to aggressively hunt for its first win of the season, but the Fighting Scots possess the G-MAC’s top scorer in Darryl Walker at over 20 points per contest. Walker dropped 24 points against Lenoir-Rhyne and 18 more against a 5-0 Lander squad.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Cedarville (6-1) continues to run roughshod on the competition in the midst of a four-game winning streak led by the talented backcourt of Ryan and Kaysie Brittenham.

The Lady Jackets have possession of all three of the league’s weekly honors this season and stormed past Ferris State in a compelling overtime final in their lone game last week.

For the second time this year, Trevecca (2-4) handled Alabama-Huntsville with ease, this time running the Chargers out of Nashville with a 21-point margin of victory. The Trojans also routed UAH back on Nov. 17 in Alabama. This time around, TU overcame a minor two-point halftime deficit and outscored its opponent 40-17 in the second half.

Alderson Broaddus (1-4) etched its first tally in the win column last night with a rout against Washington Adventist.

Matching Cedarville’s current four-game win streak is Davis & Elkins (4-1), who won against West Virginia Tech, and now has a chance to exact revenge for a season-opening loss this evening against Bluefield State.

Central State (1-3) is also looking to get back on track after a heartbreaking one-point loss against Kentucky State last Wednesday. The Marauders host Ursuline on Saturday to tip off the conference slate.

Kentucky Wesleyan (2-4) won both games against Berea and Saint Joseph’s (Ind.), a team that beat Alderson Broaddus and Salem International earlier in the week. Jordanne Gambill and Erin Dorn both scored 19 points to lead the Panthers in a Sunday battle.

With six players active, Ohio Valley (0-4) has been shorthanded in a number of close finishes and foul trouble was an issue against Penn State-Beaver to begin the month of December. The Fighting Scots finished with four players on the floor despite a gutsy effort as Danielle Dunnagan and Meissa Ndeye Diop combined for 43 points.

Ursuline (0-6) was on the short end of games against Lake Erie and Lake Superior State and the Arrows are trying to gain traction to slow down a tough start out of the gates. Likewise, Salem International (0-7) will look to put a halt to a seven-game slide to open the season.
