PEPPER PIKE, Ohio - On Thursday, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference 2014 Women’s Soccer Championships kicked off with the semifinal round, hosted by top overall seed Ursuline College. Prior to the start of each semifinal game, the G-MAC presented its 2014 All-Conference Individual Awards and later announced the student-athletes named to the All-Conference First and Second Teams, and the newly established All-Freshman Team.
Highlighting the presentations were the announcements of the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Trevecca senior Jordan Ponto was named Defensive Player of the Year, helping guide the Trojans to the number two seed in the tournament and a season series split with top seed Ursuline, that included a shutout win against the Arrows to finish the season.
The Offensive Player of the Year was Ursuline forward Vanessa Consiglio, who leads the conference in scoring with 40 as she scored the second most goals (12) in the league behind teammate Paige Rowan (15), but led the conference in assists with 16. Consiglio ranked among the nation’s best for most of the season in those categories, and remains in the top ten in both.
Alderson Broaddus’s Lauren Small was named the G-MAC Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Year as she helped the Battlers scoring efforts from the midfield in control possessions and transitioning the offense from the back.
Rounding out the individual awards, Ursuline Head Coach Jason Kubbins and Trevecca Coach Mark Foster split the voting down the middle and were voted G-MAC Women’s Soccer Co-Coach of the Year. Kubbins guided his team to their first regular-season title, while Trevecca finished second in the conference, both teams earning a bye into the semifinals, hosted by Urusline.
In addition to the individual awards, the G-MAC named an 11-member All-Conference First Team, a 12-member All-Conference Second Team, and its first-ever All-Freshman Team made up of the top-seven freshman players in the conference.
The Women’s Championship Tournament will conclude on Saturday, November 8 with the championship game kicking off at noon.
