NASHVILLE – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference released its Softball All-Conference Team and individual awards on Thursday during day one of the G-MAC Softball Championships.
Great Midwest Athletic Conference: Offensive Player of the Year
BREANNA ZEIS - Outfield
Senior - Trevecca Nazarene University
Breanna Zeis led her team to the top seed in the conference tournament and a perfect 12-0 conference record. She was the only player in the conference to hit at or above .500, as she posted a.523 average, with 10 home runs, 45 RBIs, 56 hits, 16 doubles, 27 extra base hits, and a .972 slugging percentage, which all lead the conference as well. The senior outfielder also scored 33 runs and got on base via the walk 15 times for a conference best .577 on base percentage.
As Trevecca moves through the NCAA Division II membership process, Zeis is not yet eligible for the NCAA DII softball rankings. If she were, her .523 batting average would be third best in the nation. Her doubles per game would be second, while her on-base percentage and runs batted in per game would both rank seventh nationally.
Her numbers were impressive and consistent over the entire season. She set the mark with five-straight weeks as the Offensive G-MAC Softball Athlete of the Week. In her five-week reign, she hit .565 with nine doubles, eight home runs, 23 runs scored, and 33 RBIs. She posted six-straight weeks of batting at .500 or better in those specific weeks. During the streak she posted a 16-game hitting streak as well (3-23 to 4-16) which included eight conference games and four games against future conference foe, Kentucky Wesleyan. She hit .571 over the streak with 17 runs, 26 RBI, eight doubles, and six homers.
Of her many great performances of this season a few stood out. On April 10, she scored a conference record four runs in the win against Covenant College. Then on two separate occasions, Zeis had two home runs in a single game, both against conference opponents (Ursuline and Urbana).
Great Midwest Athletic Conference: Pitcher of the Year
HALEY JO KOLMERTEN – Starting Pitcher
Junior - Urbana University
Haley Jo Kolmerten was the conference’s most impressive pitcher for most of the season and was one of the most consistent pitchers as well. She put up numbers in the top-5 of most major pitching categories. She appeared 20 times for Urbana, including 17 starts. She compiled an 11-8 record with a 2.42 earned run average and in her 107 innings, she struck out 144 while walking only 41.
In her 19 starts she went the distance 12 times and threw two shutouts. She struck out 9.4 batters per average 7 inning contest and hitters managed to hit a mere .208 against her this season.
Kolmerten began the year as good as anyone could have. She started the season with a 9-0 record, including a pair of conference wins over Ursuline and Cedarville. She posted a 1.11 earned run average over the nine starts (10 total appearances), going the distance in eight of the games including two complete game shutout performances and one combined shutout. Over her first 57 innings, she struck out 91 batters. On the season, she had six games of 10 or more strikeouts, 13 games in which she had more strikeouts than innings pitched, and in seven of 20 appearances, she allowed no earned runs.
She put together some impressive individual performances this season. Against Salem International on April 7
th, she stifled hitters by striking out a conference record 15. She failed to give up an earned run until her third start where she still got the win and struck out 13. She only gave up more than one earned run in only five of her starts.
Great Midwest Athletic Conference: Coach of the Year
BEN TYREE
Trevecca Nazarene University
Tyree was the engine of Trevecca’s perfect conference record at 12-0. His team put together a 25-10 record overall and are currently on an eight-game winning streak. He coaches the conference’s most consistent team as they rank at the top of both team hitting and pitching categories. After moving G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year Breanna Zeis up from the bottom of the order, his team thrived. Tyree coached seven members of his team onto the All-Conference Team.
Not only did his team have a good home record (13-5), his team did just as well on the road (12-5). With the heart of their schedule in April, the team excelled, as they were 15-5. His team only suffered consecutive losses three times in their 35 game schedule.
Great Midwest Athletic Conference: Freshman of the Year
RACHEL WELLS - Outfield
Freshman – Ursuline College
Rachel Wells was this year’s most impressive freshman. The first year outfielder led her team with a .308 batting average, totaling 24 hits, three home runs, 18 runs and 17 RBIs. She recorded 40 total bases for Ursuline, posting a .513 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .333. She started in all 26 games she played.
In her 78 at bats, Wells only struck out 13 times. She ranks fourth in the conference in home runs per game. Similarly, Wells nearly averaged a hit per game as a freshman. Her most impressive individual performance came on March 16
