Armond Battle has been named the G-MAC Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week, which is the final week for the honor as the G-MAC heads into the Championship Tournament starting on Friday. For Battle, this is the second time he has been named AOTW this year as an individual, giving Urbana its third AOTW this season.
Last week, in the G-MAC’s final regular-season contest, Urbana fell short at home to Central State, 64-60. However in the senior’s final home game of his career, Battle led all scorers with 34 points, which ties his season-high.
Against Central State, he recorded 15 points from the free throw line on 18 attempts, which is the third time and only three times this season a player has recorded 15 or more free throws in one game. The scoring outburst sealed Battle’s scoring title, as he led the conference with 21.1 points per game - the only player with 20 or more points per game.
Battle finished the regular-season ranked sixth in rebounding with 5.7 rebounds per game, but ranked second in defensive rebounds with 4.9 of his 5.7 rebounds coming on the defensive end. He also ranks eighth in assists with 2.0 per game; number one overall with 194 made free throws and tenth in free throw shooting percentage at 75.8%; third in three-pointers made with 1.9 per game; fifth in blocked shots with 0.8 per game; and third in steals with 1.8 per game.
Battle’s 34-point performance was his conference leading third game in which he scored 30 points or more (five other players did it one time each). It was also his conference best 15th game with 20 or more points, breaking the tie with against his opponent that night, Central State’s DeMarkus Isom Jones, who finished with 18 points.
Battle’s 10-rebounds against the Marauders gave him his second double-double of the season.
