WILBERFORCE, Ohio - (Courtesy of @CUYellowJackets) Zimmy Nwogbo erupted for 25 points, including a pair of key back-to-back three-pointers, as Cedarville clinched the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season title with a 74-69 decision at Central State.
The outcome gives the Yellow Jackets the No. 1 seed in the first-ever G-MAC Tournament which they will host in the Callan Athletic Center on March 8-9.
Nwogbo stepped up big time, especially in the second half. His thunderous dunk gave CU a 36-24 bulge early in the frame, but the host Marauders charged back to take their only lead in the final period, 48-47, on consecutive threes with 5:55 left.
Then, it was Nwogbo’s turn. Having come into the contest with just two baskets from outside the arc all season long, he swished two straight from deep to give the Jackets the advantage for good.
Central made another brief charge, but back-to-back bombs from Daniel Hickman calmed the threat. Zach Brown hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to ice it for the Yellow Jackets, 17-8 overall and 5-1 G-MAC, who won for the eighth time in a row.
“Zimmy was huge to say the least,” proclaimed Head Coach Pat Estepp. “He hit some big shots as did Hickman. But, our team defense was the key because this is such a tough place to win. I’m proud of how the guys responded.”
Nwogbo tacked on nine rebounds and two assists to his night. Brown tallied 17 points and four assists, Hickman came off the bench with 11 points, and Brian Grant chipped in 10 to go along with eight boards.
Central State dips to 15-9 and 3-2 G-MAC. The result snapped the Marauders’ seven-game homecourt winning streak.
