Nicole Burlinson has been named the Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week to open the 2013-14 season, which will be the first season the Great Midwest Athletic Conference sponsors the sport of Track and Field (Indoor and Outdoor).

After taking fourth at the G-MAC Cross Country Championships in October, Burlinson started her indoor track and field season with a bang on Friday, December 6 at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker Meet. The only Arrow competing on the opening night of the weekend event, she shattered school records in both the 1,000-meter run and the mile as well.

Burlinson ran a 3:03.98 in the 1,000m to top the previous school record of 3:13.81 that was set by Jennette Goans in 2009. Burlinson finished second overall, but was the top finishing NCAA/NAIA athlete as she finished second overall behind her UC assistant coach Maddy Outman (3:01.68), who was running unattached. The next closest NCAA/NAIA student-athlete finished almost 15 seconds behind Burlinson (3:18.78).

In the mile run on the same evening, Burlinson once again finished ahead of all active NCAA runners, posting a time of 5:15.59 to break her own school record of 5:29.75 that was achieved at the same YSU event last year. The second place finisher, Janine Powis of Slippery Rock University, finished in 5:20.29.
