ELKINS, W.Va. - The 2013 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship goes down on paper as a double overtime tie between Cedarville University and Davis & Elkins College, however the Yellow Jackets were crowned G-MAC Champions after winning in penalty kicks by a 4-3 margin.
In its previous meeting with Cedarville this season, Davis and Elkins managed a 2-0 win on its home field, the site of this afternoon’s championship. However, Cedarville, which took down Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday to earn its second-straight trip to the G-MAC Finals in as many seasons, was able to keep Davis and Elkins scoreless for 110 minutes in the rematch.
Through regulation time and two overtime periods, D&E outshot Cedarville by a slim margin at 14-11, but Cedarville earned eight corner kicks to the Senators five. Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Ethan Dewhurst and D&E keeper Cameron Rivera, each made eight saves to keep the game scoreless.
Following the end of the second overtime session, a winner had to be determined so the championship went into penalty kicks. In the best of five kicks, each team converted on its first attempt. Connor Gilmour went first for Cedarville and was answered by Wyatt Hill of D&E. Dillion King gave CU a 2-1 lead, as Daniel Nock could not covert on his attempt in the second round.
D&E pulled even in the third round as Joel Twinem was stopped and the nation’s top scorer James Pucci tied the penalty kicks at 3-3 through four rounds. In the fifth and what turned out to be the final round, Cedarville took the 4-3 lead on a goal by Zach Harris and the Yellow Jackets secured the G-MAC title as Branko Dugalic could not force a sixth round.
Each team improved upon its overall record with a tie, as Cedarville closes out the season at 13-3-4 and Davis and Elkins, after starting 0-3-1, finishes 12-4-2.
