URBANA WINS FIRST MATCH OF THE YEAR, OVER W.V. STATE IN THREE GAMES

URBANA, Ohio - (courtesy of @UUSports) After opening the season a disappointing 0-4 at the Fairmont State Invitational, the Urbana University volleyball team returned home to pick up the first win of the 2012 season.

Urbana stung the Yellow Jackets from West Virginia State University in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 29-27, earning Head Coach Troy Haught his first career victory as a Blue Knight.

Last season, the 0-4 Blue Knights dropped their fifth straight to open the season at WVSU, but Urbana turned the tables and exacted a little revenge against the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night.  Urbana's future conference foe drops to 0-5 on the season, while the Blue Knights improve to 1-4.

After dominating the opening set, Urbana played well down the stretch of the second and third sets to secure the victory.  The Yellow Jackets saw a late 7-point lead in the third set evaporate behind the hot hitting of second-year players Katlin Kremer and Kelsey Volkmer.  Kremer finished with 13 kills on 23 attempts, while Volkmer tallied 12 kills on 31 atempts.  Freshman setter Mary Hendricks dealt most of the assists, finishing with 20 in addition to her team-high 4 aces.  Senior Amy Hickman led the defense with 20 digs, and freshman Megan Verhoff chipped in 7 kills and 4 blocks.
