URBANA DROPS SEASON OPENER TO SOUTHERN INDIANA
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - (courtesy of @UUSports) The Blue Knight women's soccer team ran into a perennial powerhouse in D-II in its 2012 opener on Saturday. Playing on a neutral field at Wittenberg University, Urbana fell behind 2-0 in the first half en route to a 3-1 season-opening loss to the University of Southern Indiana.
Two years ago, the Blue Knights shocked the Screaming Eagles on their home field. Unfortunately, Urbana couldn't make it two in a row on Saturday. USI grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. The doubled that lead in the 35th minute and extended it to 3-0 in minute 71. With less than a minute to play, Urbana got on the board on an Abby Pearson penalty kick, but it was too little, too late in the 3-1 defeat.
Pearson's three shots were the most by a Blue Knight on the afternoon, and keeper Meghan Taucher finished with 10 saves in the loss.
