CEDARVILLE WINS A PAIR OF GAMES OVER THE WEEKEND
PHILIPPI, West Virginia - (Courtesy of @CUYellowJackets) Steve Ellis converted a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to keep the Yellow Jackets undefeated with a 2-1 result at Alderson-Broaddus. The next afternoon, Cedarville controlled practically every phase of the game to cruise to a 4-0 non-conference victory at Ohio Valley.
The Yellow Jackets, 5-0, overall outshot the Scots 23-1 overall including a 15-0 margin in the second half. The shots on goal were 13-1.
Against A-B, Ryan Thurman was taken down in the box early in the first overtime allowing Ellis to do what he does best. The senior captain calmly stepped to the spot and successfully scored his second PK of the young season.
The two future Great Midwest Athletic Conference foes played scoreless soccer deep into the second half. Eric Newman put Cedarville on the board in the 73rd minute on an assist from Ethan Shula
.
The Battlers needed just five minutes to equalize, ironically, on a penalty kick. The Yellow Jackets didn't allow a shot in the first half and registered the first 10 shots of the contest. This was the first men's soccer meeting between the two schools. AB falls to 1-2.
TREVECCA DOMINATES WITH AN 11-0 WIN OVER HIWASSEE COLLEGE
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - (Courtesy of @TNUsports) Tucker Archie's hat trick led Trevecca Nazarene University (3-1) to an 11-0 win over Hiwassee College (0-1) Friday night at the TNU Soccer Complex.
The 11 goals scored were the most since Sept. 8, 2001 when the Trojans tallied the same amount over Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
Trevecca scored nine of its goals in the first half alone. Matthew Esquivel got things started in the seventh minute when took a pass from Holland Clement and sank the shot in the left corner.
After goals by Ryan Walls and Richie Reichenber within 13 seconds of each other, Archie got his first goal of the match in the 23rd minute when he hit a shot from center box. Archie added two more to his total in the 35th and 36th minutes.
In the second half, Matt Raines and Juan Egas found the back of the net to finalize Trevecca's scoring. Both Raines and Egas scored twice for TNU.
URBANA DROPS A TIGHT GAME, 2-1 ON THE ROAD AGAINST FINDLAY
FINDLAY, Ohio - (Courtesy of @UUSports) For 85 minutes, the Urbana University men's soccer team played almost flawlessly at the University of Findlay. Junior Carl Peers put the Blue Knights ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute on an assist from teammate Tyler Wason. Urbana's offense continued to churn out better looks on goal, and the defense stonewalled every Oiler opportunity. With less than 5 minutes to go, however, the Oilers finally broke through on a Damani Storms unassisted goal.
The shellshocked Blue Knights tried to regroup in overtime. The offense had 3 shots to end it in overtime, while the defense held Findlay without a single shot over the first 9 and a half minutes. Then, with just 23 seconds left in the first OT, Findlay's Ryan Poyle fed Mark Sleasman who fired the one and only Oiler shot of the extra frame. The ball found the back of the net and sent the home team into a celebrating frenzy.
The heartbreaking 2-1 loss dropped Urbana to 2-2-0 on the year, while the Oilers stay undefeated at 2-0-0. Urbana returns home to host another GLIAC opponent on Tuesday night. The Lake Erie College Storm come to Urbana for a 4:00 p.m. game.
